good-news-for-mutual-fund-investors:sebi-reduces-brokerage-fees,-simplifies-rules

Investing in mutual funds is about to get a little cheaper. Sebi, the watchdog for India’s stock market, has announced changes that aim to reduce the fees investors pay. The regulator has made clear demarcation between statutory and regulatory levies, brokerage fees and the Base Expense Ratio (BER). This means fund houses will have to be more transparent about how they calculate their charges. One of the biggest changes is a cut in brokerage fees. These fees, which are paid when buying and selling stocks, have been reduced from 12 paise to 6 paise in the cash market and 5 paise to 2 paise in the derivative market. While this might seem like a small amount, it can add up over time, especially for frequent traders. Easier Rules for Stock Brokers Sebi is also working to make life easier for stock brokers. The regulator is simplifying the rules they have to follow, cutting down on paperwork and making compliance less of a headache. The new regulatory framework has been introduced to simplify operational and compliance requirements that will lead to a 44% reduction – from 162 to 88 pages. This should help brokers focus on serving their clients, rather than getting bogged down in red tape. Debt Issuers Can Now Incentivise Investors Sebi will allow debt issuers to incentivise investors. Lock-in Period for Non-Promoters To protect investors, Sebi is also tightening the rules for people who pledge their shares before a company launches an IPO. The regulator has amended the ICDR that depositories shall record these securities as non-transferable for the lock-in period. This ensures that these shares remain locked in for a set time, preventing them from being sold off too quickly after the IPO. These changes are all part of Sebi’s ongoing efforts to make the stock market more accessible and investor-friendly. By reducing fees, simplifying rules, and increasing transparency, Sebi hopes to encourage more people to invest in the market and build a secure financial future.
