In the first part of the Madhya Pradesh Crime Files, we recounted the shocking incident that shook the state on May 8, 2014. At the Sundarvan Marriage Garden in Lalghati, Bhopal, during the wedding reception of Dr. Jayshree Namdev and Dr. Rohit Namdev, the sounds of music and celebration were replaced by gunfire and screams when a man opened fire, fatally wounding the bride. The wedding shooting During the post-varmala photo session, Anurag Namdev, a relative of the bride, suddenly appeared on stage. Before anyone could react, he pulled out a pistol and shot Dr. Jayshree in the neck. He also attempted to fire at the groom, Dr. Rohit Namdev, but the groom managed to grab his hand. A stray bullet struck a friend of the groom, Kachru Sisodia, in the leg. Guests immediately overpowered the shooter, who was subsequently arrested by police. When questioned, Jaishree’s father, Ghanshyam Namdev, revealed a shocking truth — the shooter was none other than Anurag Namdev, the son of his maternal aunt Angooribai. Jaishree had considered him a brother, and he was someone she had tied a Rakhi to. A tale of one-sided love and obsession In police custody, Anurag confessed to his crime, describing it as a case of uncontrolled, obsessive love. He said, I loved Jaishree immensely. I became mad for her. I could not see her belong to anyone else. That is why I killed her. Even if I get the death penalty, I accept it. At least death will come once. If she belonged to someone else, I would have died every day. Ghanshyam Namdev revealed that the family had intentionally not invited Anurag to the wedding, fearing his obsessive tendencies. How obsession developed Anurag came to Bhopal to live with his maternal uncle and aunt after his father passed away. Jayshree and her family cared for him like their own child. During a severe illness, Ghanshyam admitted Anurag to Hamidia Hospital at his own expense. During this time, Anurag’s feelings for his cousin turned into obsessive, romantic love, far beyond the boundaries of family affection. After completing his studies, he got a bank PO job in Sagar but continued to obsess over Jayshree, calling her “Jaya” — a name of endearment that carried no familial tone. Failed attempts at intervention Jaishree tried repeatedly to make Anurag understand the inappropriateness of his feelings. When her engagement to Dr. Rohit Namdev was finalized on February 3, 2014, Anurag’s jealousy escalated. After seeing engagement photos posted on social media on February 5, he threatened both Jayshree and her father, insisting he would only marry her and warning of dire consequences if denied. Anurag even sent a threatening message to his cousin Shailendra Namdev, saying: Take care of your daughters. They have a long life to live. The fatal day Despite precautions, Anurag arrived uninvited at the wedding on May 8, 2014, and carried out the attack. Police collected evidence, and eyewitness testimonies confirmed the crime. During the trial, Anurag initially denied firing the gun, claiming he was attacked at the gate. However, evidence and witness accounts proved otherwise. On February 11, 2015, Bhopal District Court sentenced him to life imprisonment. A tragic end in prison While serving his sentence, Anurag was granted parole in 2019. On June 12, 2019, he was supposed to return to central jail by 5 PM. However, that morning at his home in Sagar, he hanged himself with a towel, ending his life. The aftermath This horrifying story of unrequited love and obsession destroyed two families: This case remains a dark reminder of the dangers of obsessive love and its devastating consequences.
