It is said that Mahant Tapasi Maharaj received a divine indication in his dream that Mata Janaki and Luv-Kush had stayed for some time at Valmiki Ashram located on the hill of Karila village. After the dream, Tapasi Maharaj searched for this place and found the ashram exactly as he had seen in his dream. After this, he stayed there and started worship-rituals, and with the cooperation of nearby villagers, this place gradually became a major religious center. Millions of devotees will arrive for darshan The historic Karila fair on the occasion of Rang Panchami has begun at the famous Maa Janaki Dham Karila. Since this morning (Sunday), a huge crowd of devotees has been gathering in the temple premises. According to administration estimates, lakhs of devotees will reach Karila Dham for darshan of Mata Janaki in the next 24 hours. The fair was traditionally inaugurated with the flag hoisting ceremony. It is said – Mother Sita stayed here Karila Dham has deep religious beliefs associated with it. It is believed that when Lord Ram sent Mother Sita to exile, she stayed at Sage Valmiki’s ashram. It is considered to be the place where Mother Sita gave birth to her sons Luv and Kush. According to legend, celestial nymphs descended from heaven during the birth of Luv-Kush and danced in celebration. Following this belief, there is a tradition of dancers performing Badhai dance on the night of Rang Panchami. Even today, hundreds of dancers perform Rai dance throughout the night. Unique Temple, where there is no idol of Ram The temple of Karila Dham is considered different from other temples. Here, idols of Mother Sita, Luv-Kush and Sage Valmiki are installed, but there is no idol of Lord Ram. The idols installed in the temple are considered hundreds of years old and despite being small in size, are considered extremely sacred. Here, Mother Sita is primarily worshipped. Fair Started with the Tradition of Flag Hoisting The fair at Karila Dham begins with the tradition of flag hoisting. It is said that people from Lalitpur village in Vidisha district started the tradition of hoisting a flag here on Rang Panchami many years ago. Over time, this tradition grew and the number of devotees increased. Gradually, temporary markets and shops started setting up here and this event took the form of a huge fair. Sacred cave opens only once a year The most important faith of Karila Dham is associated with that sacred cave where Mata Sita is believed to have given birth to Luv-Kush. This cave is opened only once a year, that is on the occasion of Rang Panchami. After the worship and rituals, the cave doors are opened for devotees and they can have darshan here for about 24 hours. After this, the cave is closed again. The ash from the burning fire inside the cave is considered extremely sacred and devotees receive it as prasad. Rai Dance is performed when wishes are fulfilled The tradition of Rai dance in Karila Dham is very old. Although Rai dances are performed here on other days as well, it has special significance on Rang Panchami. From morning till late night, hundreds of dancers present dance performances here. It is believed that any devotee who makes a wish to Mother Janaki and their wish gets fulfilled, they arrange a Rai dance in the Mother’s court as a form of thanksgiving. This dance is performed upon fulfillment of various wishes such as childbirth, getting a job, success in business, or winning an election. Rai dance continues all night The Rai dance begins on Rang Panchami morning at Karila hill. The dancers first perform in front of Mata Janaki at the temple. After this, the program continues day and night. At the conclusion of the fair, all dancers perform a group dance together, which is called “Ghera ki Rai”. The fair is considered officially concluded with this special performance.
