Chaos erupted outside Rannod police station in Shivpuri district on Saturday evening over a challan issued during vehicle checking. The situation escalated to violence as a mob assaulted a constable on duty, tore his uniform and hit him on the head with stones, leaving him injured. The incident occurred during routine vehicle checking outside the police station. Manoj Jatav, a resident of the Myana area, was travelling in a car with his pregnant wife and other family members when police checked seat belts and documents and issued a challan. During this, Manoj’s brother-in-law Nilesh Jatav, a resident of Rannod, arrived at the spot with his associates and began objecting. The argument soon turned into a scuffle. Surrounded the duty constable and severely beat him Police alleged that men and women from the crowd surrounded constable Avadhesh Sharma and beat him. During the assault, a stone was thrown at his head, causing serious injury. A nine-second video of the incident has surfaced, showing the constable being attacked. After the incident, family members accused the police of assault and staged a protest outside the police station. The situation remained tense. BJP district president Jaswant Jatav reached the spot around 11 pm and strongly criticised the police officials. The sit-in continued till around 2:30 am. ‘I am forced to hide my face,’ says BJP district president During the protest, Jaswant Jatav lashed out at police officers, saying excessive challan drives had angered the public. He said the police had “boxed the BJP and its government” and claimed he was being forced to “hide his face” while moving around the area. He demanded the immediate suspension of the Rannod TI and registration of FIRs against the policemen involved. TI says ready to resign if found guilty Amid the heated exchange, the Rannod station in-charge defended himself, stating that if even one percent fault was found on his part, he was ready to resign. He said CCTV cameras were installed across the premises and footage could be checked. SDOP officials said action would be taken after an inquiry by the SDM. Allegation of assault on pregnant woman, video surfaces The Jatav family alleged that police assaulted them first, injuring a pregnant woman and a child, following which they blocked the road. However, another video later surfaced showing the woman walking normally with her child after the incident. Protest ends after assurance by ASP Police forces from nearby stations were deployed to control the situation. Additional SP Sanjeev Mule reached the spot late at night and assured fair action, after which the protest ended around 2:30 am. SDOP Sanjay Mishra said medical examinations of the injured had been conducted and further action would be taken after the investigation. District President (to station in-charge): What exactly is your duty? (Turning towards SDOP) Suspend the station in-charge right now and file FIR against those constables. Take that woman to hospital and get her medical done immediately.
Station In-charge: Sir, if even one percent fault is found on my part, you may punish me as you see fit. The entire premises has CCTV cameras — you can check everything. District President: So will you beat up women? Station In-charge: No one assaulted her. If any fault is established, I will resign. SDOP: Let the SDM first conduct an inquiry into the matter, then action will be taken. District President: If you wait for an inquiry, those involved will be cleared. I request you to register FIRs against those policemen right now. Six hours have passed and you are still not taking a decision. What do you want? This is not rule of law — it is your rule. You have locked the Bharatiya Janata Party and its government in a box. SDOP: Even the people sitting on protest are not complaining against the station in-charge. District President: The station in-charge is responsible, SDOP sahib. This place needs a captain. I have been observing the area for the past eight days and I am forced to hide my face while moving around. How many policemen actually wear helmets? I know everything.
