More than 400 newborns died in Chhatarpur district over a span of just eight months, between April and November 2025, even as 16,912 deliveries were recorded during the same period. Following the emergence of these alarming neonatal mortality figures, the Health Department has initiated a comprehensive verification process to authenticate the data across all administrative and medical levels. Where the deaths occurred According to official health department data: These figures have raised serious concerns regarding maternal and neonatal healthcare services in the district. Chhatarpur block records highest number Block-wise data shows that the Chhatarpur block reported the highest number of newborn deaths at 179. Other blocks recorded the following numbers: SNCU data claims declining mortality Despite the overall figures, data from the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) suggest a declining trend in newborn mortality. From April to November, 176 deaths were recorded in SNCUs, with officials claiming a gradual reduction in fatalities by November. CMHO: Data under verification Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr R.P. Gupta stated that all reported figures are being thoroughly verified. “Reports from SNCU in-charges, civil surgeons, and block medical officers are being cross-checked. Departmental reviews indicate a decline in the neonatal mortality rate,” he said. 10% newborns classified as high-risk The CMHO further explained that around 10 percent of newborns fall under the high-risk category, making them more vulnerable to complications and death. “Timely identification, improved treatment, and strengthening healthcare facilities are key focus areas. Continuous reviews and corrective measures are being taken,” he added. However, when contacted again on Wednesday for further clarification, the CMHO reportedly declined to speak and left the spot in his vehicle, avoiding further interaction with the media.
