‘bar’-at-home-for-₹500-in-bhopal:excise-dept-rolls-out-special-new-year-provision;-one-day-liquor-licence-introduced

As New Year celebrations approach, the Excise Department in Bhopal has introduced a special provision allowing residents to set up a temporary bar at home for just Rs 500. Party hosts will need to obtain a one-day liquor license, while larger commercial events may have to pay fees ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 2 lakh, depending on crowd size. The new guidelines have been issued ahead of December 31 and January 1, enabling citizens and event organisers to legally serve alcohol during New Year celebrations. One-day license for homes, hotels and event venues Under the new excise guidelines, licenses can be obtained for a variety of locations, including private homes, public venues, marriage gardens, hotels, and restaurants. Higher fees for commercial events From the 2025–26 excise year, commercial events—where entry is allowed through tickets or payment of a fixed fee—will attract the highest charges under the FL-5 license category. This provision is expected to impact large New Year parties hosted by hotels, resorts, and event management companies. Over 350 establishments expected to apply Officials estimate that more than 350 hotels, dhabas, and hospitality establishments in Bhopal may apply for a one-day liquor-serving license this New Year, similar to previous years. Online application process Assistant Excise Commissioner Virendra Singh Dhakad has issued the official order, clarifying that the entire process for obtaining a temporary license will be conducted online. Applicants can visit https://eaabkari.mp.gov.in , click on the New License option, and log in using an OTP sent to their registered mobile number. The license can also be generated through the eaabkari Connect App by completing step-by-step details. Conditions and consumption rules Alcohol consumption will be permitted only at the location for which the license has been issued. The same rule applies to hotels, restaurants, and dhabas. Excise Controller RG Bhadoria stated that while applying online, applicants must specify their demand, based on which the permissible quantity of alcohol will be allowed. Limits on alcohol possession As per excise rules, an individual can legally transport and possess: The department has urged citizens and organisers to strictly follow licensing norms to ensure lawful and safe New Year celebrations.
