Read Part 1 of Crime Files… The morning walk that turned into a nightmare Date: May 28, 2021 Time: Around 6:00 am Location: Amarnath Road near Gabbar Dairy, Kolar Road, Bhopal For Pradeep Meena, a resident of Kolar Road, the morning of May 28 began like any other day. He stepped out around 5:30 am for his daily morning walk, enjoying the calm and fresh air of the early hours. As he walked along Amarnath Road and approached an open field near Gabbar Dairy, he noticed something unusual by the roadside. What he saw next horrified him. A human body lay on the ground, badly mutilated. Stray dogs and pigs were tearing at the remains. Shocked and terrified, Pradeep gathered courage, shouted loudly and chased the animals away. His cries alerted nearby residents, who soon gathered at the spot. On closer inspection, Pradeep realised the body belonged to Mohan Maran (40), a man from his own neighbourhood. Though the face was almost unrecognisable, remnants of clothing and body structure confirmed the identity. A horrifying condition: Signs of extreme violence Police arrived at the scene shortly after receiving the information. Even at first glance, it was clear that this was no accidental or natural death. The condition of Mohan’s body was horrifying: While it was evident that animals had mauled the body after death, the injuries suggested severe violence before he died. Police concluded that Mohan had been brutally assaulted and murdered before his body was dumped in the open field. A murder case was immediately registered, and a detailed investigation began. Who was Mohan Maran? The victim Mohan Maran (40) was unmarried and lived in Damkheda A-Sector, Kolar Road, with his elder brother’s family. The household included, Sister-in-law Urmila Meena, Her minor son Raju, Daughter Riya (names changed for privacy). Apart from the family, the house also had tenants. A man named Rajesh lived there with his wife Sonu, while another woman named Asha rented a separate room. According to Mohan’s brother Sunil, Mohan was the youngest sibling and often stayed with Urmila’s family. He was last seen on the evening of May 27 around 4:30 pm. The next morning, the family received the devastating news of his death. Early investigation: A blind murder case Police were faced with multiple unanswered questions: Initially, there were no clear leads. No eyewitnesses came forward, and the crime scene offered limited clues. For investigators, it appeared to be a classic blind murder. Neighbours speak: Alcohol, abuse and daily conflicts As police began questioning neighbours, a troubling picture of Mohan’s behaviour emerged. Residents revealed that Mohan was a habitual alcoholic who often created disturbances. He frequently came home drunk, abused his sister-in-law, Urmila, and sometimes became violent. Neighbours said that arguments in the house were common. On the evening of May 27—the night before the body was found—Mohan reportedly arrived intoxicated and created a major scene. Tenants Rajesh, his wife Sonu, and Asha gave similar statements. Urmila also told police that Mohan had come drunk around 11 pm, abused her, and was driven out of the house. She claimed she had no idea where he went afterwards or who might have killed him. All statements appeared consistent, yet something did not add up. A crucial clue: Bloodstains on the wall During a routine search of the house, police noticed faint stains on a wall—marks that looked like they had been scrubbed clean. Suspecting foul play, officers called in the forensic team. Samples were collected and sent for laboratory testing. When the forensic report arrived, it changed the entire course of the investigation. The blood found on the wall belonged to Mohan Maran. This revelation made it clear that Mohan had been assaulted inside the house before his body was dumped elsewhere. Police intensified questioning and re-examined earlier statements. Pressure mounts, truth begins to surface Under stricter interrogation, the stories of the residents began to crack. Based on fresh statements from tenants Asha, Mamta and Sonu, police registered a case against Urmila, her son Raju, and tenant Rajesh on suspicion of murder. But the most horrifying twist was yet to come. Buried secret: Skeleton found under the floor While searching every corner of the house, the police noticed a strange raised platform near one of the rooms. It looked different from the rest of the flooring. Suspicious, officers ordered an excavation. What emerged from beneath the ground stunned everyone present. A human skeleton was buried there. Investigators were now dealing with not one, but two bodies linked to the same house. Shockingly, none of the residents—neither Urmila, her children, nor the tenants—claimed any knowledge of the buried skeleton, despite living there for years. Confession: A heinous family crime uncovered Confronted with mounting evidence, Urmila finally broke down and confessed. She told police that Mohan suspected her daughter, Riya, of having an affair with tenant Rajesh. This suspicion often led to violent arguments and abuse. On the night of May 27, Mohan arrived drunk and began hurling abuses once again. Initially driven away, Mohan returned around 11 pm. He climbed over the boundary wall, entered the courtyard and continued abusing the family. At this point, Urmila allegedly lost control and told her children, “This time, let’s finish him.” What followed was brutal and merciless. Mohan succumbed to the injuries. Disposing of the body and destroying evidence After the murder, the accused placed Mohan’s body on an Activa scooter and dumped it in a deserted riverside field near Gabbar Dairy. They washed bloodstains from the room, plastered the courtyard with cow dung to erase evidence, and hid the murder weapons. Police arrested Urmila, Raju and Rajesh and produced them before court. One mystery solved, another still haunting investigators While the murder of Mohan Maran was solved, the skeleton buried inside the house remains an unresolved mystery. MP Crime Files – Part 2 will explore: The answers point to an even darker chapter—one that investigators were yet to uncover.
