A PhD scholar from Indore, Dr. Rohini Ghavari, currently residing in Switzerland, has accused Nagina MP Chandra Shekhar Azad of exploiting her under the pretext of marriage. The allegations have sent shockwaves through her family, who say repeated attempts to seek justice in India have failed. Speaking with the Dainik Bhaskar, Rohini’s mother Nutan Ghavari, said, “Our family has approached Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi Police multiple times, yet no action has been taken”. She warned that if her daughter does not receive justice, the family may stage a mass suicide in front of the Parliament. Nutan said, Chandra Shekhar destroyed my daughter’s life. We have complained to the Prime Minister and even personally approached Delhi Police, but no FIR has been filed. If my daughter is not given justice, our family will protest in the most extreme manner. Timeline of alleged harassment According to her father, Shiv Ghavari, Rohini first highlighted her distress via social media from Switzerland. She claimed that MP Chandra Shekhar Azad, who presented himself as unmarried, emotionally and physically manipulated her under the guise of marriage. Her father said the MP also tried to lure him with a position in the Bhim Army during a 2022 visit, which Shiv Ghavari declined. Rohini reportedly maintained close contact with the MP through daily 18-hour-long video calls. He allegedly told her, “I lost the assembly elections, but marrying you will secure my future.” He also allegedly promised her significant political roles and responsibilities, adding to her confusion and emotional strain. First read all three X posts of Rohini… Return to India and attempts to seek justice After warning her family from Switzerland, Rohini returned to India on August 8 to formally lodge complaints. Her father confirmed that they met the Delhi Police Commissioner, who stated that she would need to personally appear in India for any formal action. Despite her return, no substantial action was taken. Rohini repeatedly expressed her anguish to her family, describing the mental harassment she endured. She explained that she filed complaints online with the PMO, Delhi Police, and Women’s Commission, but these efforts did not yield any FIR or formal investigation. Defamation notice and legal action by MP Following Rohini’s social media allegations, Chandra Shekhar Azad issued a defamation notice on September 9. Shiv Ghavari said the family is preparing a legal response through their lawyer, highlighting that the MP referenced her social media posts in the notice. Social media suicide warnings On social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Rohini posted multiple messages threatening suicide, tagging Prime Minister Modi and the PMO. She wrote, “Do not bring my body back to India. Nobody listened to me, and all supported the criminal. This is my final farewell.” Her messages also included accusations against the MP and his family, stating that her life had been ruined by the alleged betrayal. Three days before the news coverage, Rohini posted another message tagging the PM, stating, “This will be the greatest shame of your tenure if a Valmiki Dalit daughter of India is forced to end her life at the United Nations platform because she was denied justice in her own country. The system listens only to powerful people and ignores victims like me.” Dainik Bhaskar has appealed to Rohini not to take any suicidal steps. Family discovers MP’s marital status Nutan Ghavari said that Rohini had initially expressed her desire to marry Chandra Shekhar Azad. However, the family later discovered that he was already married. Both Rohini and her family withdrew from pursuing the relationship after learning this. The revelation intensified the family’s sense of betrayal and urgency for justice. Detailed complaint to authorities In her formal complaint, Rohini described how she was emotionally, socially, and physically exploited. She alleged that Azad misled her, took advantage of her trust, and broke promises of marriage. She also stated that she had supported his social and political campaigns while abroad, believing in his assurances. Her complaint detailed that this exploitation led to social defamation, with people using derogatory terms against her, causing severe psychological distress and depression, and resulting in two suicide attempts. Rohini requested strict action against the MP, stressed that such steps are crucial to ensure justice and to prevent other women from being subjected to similar manipulation. Family frustration with authorities Rohini told Dainik Bhaskar that repeated inaction by authorities left her feeling helpless. “I am extremely disturbed. No one listens to me, and the police are influenced by the accused. What choice do I have but to consider ending my life?” She said she was repeatedly told by the Delhi Police Commissioner that “no orders have been issued from above.” Her parents expressed concern over the lack of formal action and said that despite multiple attempts to lodge complaints and provide evidence, the system continues to favor influential individuals over victims. Appeal for justice The family and Rohini herself have appealed for immediate intervention. They stressed that such exploitation and harassment should be prevented, and that victims should not have to resort to extreme measures to receive justice. The case has drawn attention to broader concerns regarding women’s safety, political influence, and accountability in India.
