India will be playing two Tests in Sri Lanka this August. This was confirmed by the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and these two matches will be part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27. This would thus be the second Test assignment for the Indian cricket team this year, the previous one being a one-off match against Afghanistan, which the Shubman Gill-led side won handsomely by an innings and 300 runs. India thus would play a Tests in Sri Lanka after six years, with the last occasion being in 2017, where the team led by Virat Kohli had secured a 3-0 whitewash. India to play first Test on Independence Day An official statement by Sri Lanka Cricket stated that these two Tests will be played at the Galle International Cricket Stadium (GICS) in Galle and the Singhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Colombo. India would be in action on Independence Day, with the first Test being from 15 to 19 August. The second Test will be played between 23 and 27 August. Both these Test matches will start at 10:00 AM IST (Indian Standard Time). How have India performed on Independence Day? India so far, have featured in five matches, all being Tests on 15 August. Out of these five matches, India have had one win, a no result and three losses. India’s first match on 15 August dates way back to 1952, when the team played a Test against England, a match that did not have a result. India’s next match on Independence Day was in 2001, which resulted in a 10-wicket defeat for the Men in Blue against Sri Lanka. India had suffered defeats to England (2014) and Sri Lanka (2015) on Independence Day. India’s only win on Independence Day came against England in 2021 when a Kohli-led team registered a historic victory at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. India are fifth on the WTC 2025-27 points table, with four wins in nine matches so far, having a 48.15 point percentage. Winning these two Tests against Sri Lanka would be crucial for the team led by Shubman Gill if they are to eventually finish in the top two spots and secure a spot in the WTC 2027 final.
