The Ujjain administration has launched a drive to introduce Unique Identification (UID) numbers for all e-rickshaws and auto-rickshaws in the city to improve traffic management and passenger safety. The rule came into effect on Wednesday, making it mandatory for all such vehicles to obtain a Unique ID within the next seven days. As part of the special registration campaign, a large number of e-rickshaw and auto drivers have been visiting traffic police stations to register their vehicles and obtain the new IDs. Long queues at registration centres During the seven-day registration period, Unique IDs are being issued without additional formalities. However, the rush of applicants has resulted in long queues at traffic police stations, causing inconvenience to drivers. Many e-rickshaw drivers said they learned through news reports that operating a vehicle without a Unique ID would invite action by the authorities. To avoid penalties, most are rushing to complete the registration process. Drivers reported waiting between one and one-and-a-half hours at registration centres. Around 30 to 40 vehicles were registered on the first day of the campaign, with more applicants continuing to arrive. Drivers raise concerns over proposed shift system Meanwhile, the administration is considering a new operational model aimed at reducing traffic congestion. Under the proposed system, 2,500 vehicles would operate from 3 AM to 3 PM, while another 2,500 vehicles would run from 3 PM to 3 AM. The proposal has drawn objections from several e-rickshaw drivers. Drivers say night operations are impractical Drivers argued that a fixed day-and-night shift system would not be practical for everyone. Many cited family responsibilities, saying they are only able to work during the daytime. Others expressed concerns about safety while driving at night. Some drivers also said they suffer from vision problems, making it difficult and unsafe for them to operate vehicles after dark. They urged the administration to consider these practical challenges before implementing the proposed shift-based system.
