The first spell of monsoon rain in Madhya Pradesh has exposed shortcomings in civic infrastructure and ongoing construction projects in Jabalpur and nearby areas. Even a light shower was enough to turn the main road leading to the world-famous tourist destination of Bhedaghat into a waterlogged stretch, while low-lying areas of Katangi Nagar Parishad witnessed severe flooding. The situation has raised questions over the quality of construction work and the lack of adequate drainage systems. Road construction hit by waterlogging Road construction on the main Bhedaghat route was disrupted as soon as the rains began. Residents alleged that the construction agency failed to make proper drainage arrangements or complete road levelling before the onset of the monsoon. As a result, rainwater accumulated on the unfinished road, creating muddy and waterlogged conditions that have made commuting difficult for both pedestrians and motorists. Locals said the absence of an effective drainage system has worsened the situation and expressed strong resentment against the construction company. Tourism and Local businesses affected The poor road conditions have also affected tourism and local businesses. Bhedaghat attracts hundreds of domestic and international tourists every day, but the waterlogged and muddy roads have made access to the area difficult. Shopkeepers said customers are unable to reach their establishments because of the flooding, resulting in a decline in business. Residents warned that if immediate alternative arrangements are not made, the poor infrastructure could damage Bhedaghat’s reputation as an internationally recognised tourist destination.
