In a major breakthrough in the child theft case at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel District Hospital in Satna, police have arrested the accused who allegedly tried to abduct a two-day-old newborn. City Kotwali police arrested the accused on Thursday. Police have registered a kidnapping case against him and started the process of producing him before the court. Accused was roaming in intoxicated condition City Kotwali police station in-charge Ravendra Dwivedi said the accused has been identified as Vipin Soni, a resident of Patnaha Building area in Kolgawan. At the time of the incident, the accused was allegedly roaming around the maternity ward of the hospital in an intoxicated state. There, he got into an argument with newborn’s mother Shivani Choudhary over a mobile charger. To “teach her a lesson”, the accused allegedly decided to abduct her child. Misled woman by saying “Put the baby to sleep” Shivani Choudhary, a resident of Mada Tola, had given birth to a baby boy on Tuesday morning itself. Around 2 am on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, accused Vipin Soni was seen suspiciously roaming near the ward. He approached Shivani and told her, “Feed the baby and put him to sleep.” The accused kept a close watch on the woman. As soon as the exhausted mother fell into deep sleep, he quietly picked up the two-day-old newborn, placed him inside a bag he was carrying and rushed out of the hospital. When the youth was stopped and questioned, he got nervous While the accused was taking away the baby hidden inside the bag, Abhilasha Tiwari, a resident of Nai Basti, noticed him. At the same time, she heard the sound of a baby crying from inside the bag. On looking carefully, she saw the tiny feet of the infant sticking out of the bag. Growing suspicious, when Abhilasha stopped the man and questioned him, he panicked and tried to flee. Without hesitation, Abhilasha raised an alarm and chased him. Seeing himself surrounded, the accused threw the newborn along with the bag onto the ground and escaped taking advantage of the darkness. Hearing the commotion, hospital staff and relatives rushed to the spot and safely handed the crying baby back to his mother. Truth revealed based on CCTV footage and evidence As soon as the information was received, police scanned CCTV footage from the hospital. Statements of eyewitnesses and Abhilasha Tiwari were recorded. Based on evidence and visuals captured in CCTV cameras, police laid a trap and arrested accused Vipin Soni. During intensive questioning, the accused confessed that he attempted to abduct the child following the dispute over the charger. Police are now taking further action to send him to jail.
