Amid a two-month supply shortage, commercial LPG cylinders in Madhya Pradesh have become ₹993 costlier. In Bhopal, a cylinder will now cost ₹3,074; in Indore ₹3,179; in Jabalpur ₹3,290; in Gwalior ₹3,296; and in Ujjain ₹3,241. In just two months, rates have gone up by ₹1,248, directly impacting common people. Commercial cylinder prices have risen at a time when hotels, restaurants and roadside eateries are receiving only 50% of the gas they need. With more than 20,000 weddings scheduled in the state by July, the shortage and price rise could further increase public hardship. Food for 500 guests to cost ₹50,000 more Ram Babu Sharma of the Madhya Pradesh Tent Caterers Association said the cylinder price hike would push up hotel and catering costs by up to 10%. He said a food budget of ₹5 lakh for 500 guests would now rise by ₹45,000 to ₹50,000. He added that a 5% to 10% increase in cylinder rates would have been reasonable, but a nearly 50% jump is unjustified. He said the government should roll back the decision. Hotel operators say food prices will have to rise Tejkulpal Singh Pali, president of the Bhopal Hotel and Restaurant Association, said commercial gas cylinders have become around ₹1,250 costlier in the last two months — roughly a 60% increase compared with earlier rates. He said till February, a cylinder was available for ₹1,800, but now only half the required supply is being received. Due to the shortage of commercial gas, hotels are being forced to use diesel furnaces and induction systems, increasing diesel and electricity costs. As a result, food prices will now have to be raised. Rewa to have the costliest cylinder at ₹3,323 The costliest commercial LPG cylinder in the state will now be sold in Rewa at ₹3,323. Rates in Singrauli and Satna, as well as Narsinghpur, are ₹3,321; Katni ₹3,320; Balaghat ₹3,319; Panna ₹3,318; Shahdol ₹3,317; while Anuppur, Sidhi, Mandla, Umaria and Dindori will see cylinders priced at ₹3,315. In Seoni, the rate has gone up to ₹3,308. The lowest price in the state remains in Bhopal at ₹3,074. In Shajapur and Sehore, the rate is ₹3,081; in Harda ₹3,104; in Sagar ₹3,105; and in Vidisha and Narmadapuram ₹3,109. Restaurant food prices may rise by 10% to 20% Abhishek Baheti, MP head of the National Restaurant Association of India, said commercial gas cylinder prices have been rising every month. He said rates first increased by ₹60, then ₹195, and now by ₹993. This will push up restaurant food prices by 10% to 20%, placing an additional burden on ordinary consumers.
