In Khandwa, a young woman died after a father and son set her on fire by pouring petrol on her. The attack was done after they became angry over a molestation complaint made against them. The woman died while undergoing treatment. The court later found both accused guilty in this serious and planned crime. Second Additional Sessions Judge Anil Chaudhary sentenced Arjun, 22, and his father Mangilal, 48, residents of village Nahalda, to life imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on each of them under sections 103 (1) and 61 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023. Petrol poured on body, set on fire Prosecution Media Cell in-charge Hariprasad Banke stated that the victim, Raksha, had filed a complaint of molestation against Mangilal of the village a few days prior. To take revenge for this, the father-son duo conspired to commit murder. Around 10 AM on October 12, 2024, when Raksha was going to the bathroom built outside the house, the accused Arjun arrived there and said, “You got my father arrested, today I will kill you.” After this, he poured petrol from a bottle on the victim’s body and set her on fire with a matchstick. Raksha, engulfed in flames, ran inside the house to save her life. Family members and relatives extinguished the fire by putting a blanket on her, and she was taken to District Hospital Khandwa, where she gave statements to the police. She died during treatment. Dying declaration became the most crucial evidence In the case, Sub-Inspector Anamika Rajput of Kotwali Police Station reached the hospital, took the victim’s statement, and registered a rural complaint (Dehati Nalisi). The court considered the dying declaration as important evidence and found the involvement of the accused proven. The investigation revealed that the accused Mangilal incited his son Arjun to commit the murder, and both, with mutual consent, poured petrol and burned the victim alive. Statements of 4 witnesses, strong prosecution The case was investigated by TI Ashok Singh Chauhan, while on behalf of the prosecution, ADPO Vinod Kumar Patel, through effective advocacy, recorded the statements of 14 witnesses in the court. The court clearly stated in its verdict that this crime is not only heinous but also spreads fear and insecurity in society. In such cases, severe punishment is necessary so that no one dares to commit such a crime in the future.
