Residents of Ward 1, Jhirka Bagh, witnessed a shocking incident after members of the Kushwaha community allegedly forced a man to wear a garland of slippers and paraded him through the locality for bathing in cremation ashes and removing human remains from a crematorium. The incident followed the death of Moolchand, a resident of Jhirka Bagh, whose last rites were performed at the local cremation ground on Friday evening. Balli Kushwaha, a member of the same community, had participated in the cremation. Ashes disturbed, skull and bones found missing According to the family of the deceased, Balli returned alone to the cremation ground at around 11 pm the same night. He allegedly bathed in the ashes of the still-burning pyre and took away a skull and bones before returning home. The following morning, when Moolchand’s family members reached the cremation ground to collect the remains, they found the ashes scattered and human bones missing. A search was conducted, during which a shawl left behind at the site led to Balli’s identification. Police said a polythene bag containing bones was later recovered from outside Balli’s house. During questioning, Balli confessed to taking the remains. Public humiliation and social boycott After the confession, members of the Kushwaha community allegedly made Balli wear a garland of slippers and took out a procession in the area. His entire family was subsequently excommunicated from the community. Act driven by desire for children Family members said Balli had been married for 20 years without having children. He later married a second time and had two children, both of whom died. According to relatives, Balli had been advised by a person in Bhitarwar to bathe in cremation ashes as a ritual believed to help in having children. Allegation of being forced to consume filth Rajkumar Kushwaha, the nephew of Balli, alleged that during the incident, some people forced his uncle to drink water mixed with filth. Balli is currently undergoing medical treatment. Police action Sub-Divisional Police Officer Akansha Jain said the matter had come to the notice of the police and appropriate action was taken. Police confirmed that the accused involved in the public humiliation and related acts have been arrested. Further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
