The detention of Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari’s brother Nana Patwari has sparked a political controversy, with the party appearing set to give the issue a political angle. On Friday, Jitu and Nana held a press conference and accused the police action of being politically motivated. During the press conference, Nana Patwari admitted that he used to consume drugs until three years ago but claimed he quit completely after undergoing treatment at a rehabilitation centre. He said his only mistake was being Jitu Patwari’s brother. Jitu alleged that the state government was misusing power to target the opposition. He claimed Nana had no connection with the drug trafficking case but was still detained and harassed. The issue began after Indore’s Rajendra Nagar police detained Nana Patwari on Thursday. Police claimed that his name surfaced during questioning of two accused arrested with brown sugar. However, he was released late at night after questioning. Nana denies links with arrested accused At the press conference, Nana Patwari said his only fault was that he was the brother of Congress state president Jitu Patwari. He claimed he had no connection or financial dealings with the people arrested in the drug case. Nana said he had gone to get his car serviced when police took him along. He claimed officers only asked his name at the police station and did not give any clear reason for detaining him. He alleged that police kept moving him around the city throughout the day before releasing him late at night. Nana said his vehicle is washed at the service centre of Sanjay Kaushal alias Ronny, where Golu also works. He said police questioned him about Sanjay Kaushal and Irfan, who are Congress workers and have worked during elections. He clarified that the Scorpio vehicle being discussed belongs to Sanjay Kaushal alias Ronny and that he has no connection with any items recovered from it. He alleged that the state government was misusing power to target opposition leaders. He claimed his brother has no connection with any drug trafficking case. DCP says accused named Nana during questioning Earlier on Thursday, Indore DCP Narendra Singh Rawat said Rajendra Nagar police arrested Irfan Khan alias Golu Chanderi and Sanjay Kaushal alias Ronny near D-Mart at Ret Mandi intersection. Around 10 grams of brown sugar was allegedly recovered from them. During questioning, the two accused allegedly named Nana Patwari and Manav Gangwani. Following this, police detained Nana and Manav for questioning and later released them. DCP Rawat said police are examining call detail records and other electronic evidence. He added that action will be taken against anyone whose involvement is established during the investigation. 10 criminal cases registered against Nana Patwari Nana Patwari has around 10 criminal cases registered against him, including an attempt to murder case. He was also arrested during the 2023 Assembly elections over allegations of remaining absconding in an attempt-to-murder case that was around seven years old. In 2025, an FIR was registered against Nana and two associates at Indore’s Tejaji Nagar police station. Complainant Narendra Mehta alleged that there was an attempt to illegally occupy his land through fraud and that he was threatened with death when he opposed it. In November 2018, a case was registered against Nana Patwari under Section 354(A). A woman complainant alleged that Nana, along with several others, reached her house in cars and bikes, forcibly entered the premises and threatened her. She alleged that Nana was carrying a pistol while others had knives and swords, and that he held her hand with wrongful intent. Name also surfaced in Khushi suicide case In July 2018, 37-year-old Khushi Kulwal died by suicide in Indore. Khushi, who was often seen at high-profile parties, was found hanging at her flat in Mahalaxmi Nagar. During the investigation, police questioned people close to her, and the name of Kulbhushan alias Nana Patwari also surfaced. However, no concrete action was taken against him after questioning. The matter came into focus again in 2025 when police began investigating possible drug links and other aspects of the case. Police are probing possible connections between the case and high-profile parties, the people Khushi was in contact with and the role of individuals in the circumstances before her death.
