After the development of the Mahakal Lok corridor, Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple has witnessed an unprecedented rise in both devotee footfall and donations, reflecting growing faith among pilgrims from India and abroad. Since its inauguration, the number of devotees visiting the Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain’s Mahakal Lok has risen sharply. Earlier, around 40,000–50,000 devotees visited the temple daily. This figure has now increased to 1.5–2 lakh devotees per day, with weekends witnessing even higher footfall. In the last 11 months, over 5.5 crore devotees have visited the temple, offering generous donations in cash, gold, silver, and jewellery. Donations touch new highs From January 1 to December 15, 2025, the Mahakal Temple Committee received: Together, donations from these two sources alone amounted to ₹107.93 crore in just 11 months and 15 days. With 15 days still remaining in the year, the figure is expected to rise further due to heavy year-end pilgrim inflow. In comparison, during 2024, total income from donation boxes and Sheeghra Darshan stood at ₹92 crore, making this year’s collections about ₹15 crore higher. Jewellery donations worth over ₹13 Crore During the same period, devotees donated a significant quantity of precious metals: In total, jewellery donations alone exceeded ₹13 crore in less than a year. More silver donated compared to last year Compared to 2024, silver donations saw a sharp rise this year: 2024 (Jan 1 – Dec 13) While gold donations were slightly higher last year, silver donations increased by nearly 193 kg this year. Due to fluctuations in gold and silver prices, the overall value of donations shows a difference of nearly Rs 10 crore between the two years. In 2024, donation boxes also yielded 64 kilograms of jewellery, including diamond rings, expensive watches, US dollars, and other foreign currencies. One of India’s most visited temples According to Mahakal Temple Assistant Administrator Ashish Falwadiya, the temple receives: From January to mid-December 2025, more than 5.5 crore devotees have already visited the temple. Between December 25 and January 31, an additional 6 lakh devotees are expected. Income from other sources not included The reported income figures do not include revenue from several other sources such as: Actual total income is therefore significantly higher. Garbhagriha closed for two years, revenue impacted The temple’s Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) has remained closed to general devotees for over two years. Earlier, entry to the Garbhagriha cost Rs 750 per person, while jal arpan (water offering) was priced at Rs 1,500. From January to July 2023, before the closure, the temple earned Rs 21 crore in just seven months from Garbhagriha Darshan and Jal Arpan alone. Since July 2023, public entry has been completely stopped, resulting in a loss of large sum of amount in potential revenue for the temple committee. A testament to growing faith Despite restrictions on Garbhagriha access, the rising number of devotees and record-breaking donations underscore the deepening faith of pilgrims in Lord Mahakal, making the Ujjain temple one of the most vibrant spiritual and religious centres in the country today.
