A 35-year-old doctor from Ludhiana allegedly died by suicide at Aruna Asaf Ali Government Hospital in Delhi’s Civil Lines after administering an anaesthesia injection to himself inside the hospital’s duty room. The deceased, identified as Dr. Simarpreet Singh Anand, had been working as a Senior Resident in the Department of Anaesthesia at the hospital for the past three years. Police recovered a three-page suicide note, in which he attributed his decision to his family’s refusal to accept his relationship with a fellow doctor because they belonged to different castes. Suicide note cites opposition to inter-caste marriage According to the note, Dr. Simarpreet wrote that he was in love with a doctor working at the same hospital and wanted to marry her, but believed his parents would never approve the marriage because of caste differences. He also expressed his wish that all of his personal belongings be handed over to his girlfriend after his death. The note reportedly mentioned her name. Police said the doctor also wrote that he alone was responsible for his death. Doctor was on night duty According to North District Deputy Commissioner of Police Raja Banthia, Dr. Simarpreet was on night duty from 8 PM on July 4–5. When he arrived at the hospital, he reportedly told colleagues that he was feeling unwell and exhausted. Around 10 PM, he asked a technical assistant to insert a cannula into his left hand, saying he needed to administer some medication. Having completed an MBBS followed by an MD in Anaesthesia, he was fully aware of the effects and dosage of anaesthetic drugs, police said. Found unconscious in locked duty room When the duty room (Room No. 109) remained locked from inside until around 9 AM, hospital staff broke open the door. Dr. Simarpreet was found unconscious and was rushed to the emergency department, where doctors declared him dead. The district crime team and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Rohini, recovered a used syringe and empty medicine vials from the room. Relationship with fellow doctor mentioned in note During a search of his belongings, police recovered a black bag containing a diary and the suicide note. According to investigators, the note stated that Dr. Simarpreet had been in a relationship for the past two years with a fellow doctor at the hospital, who is a resident of Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. He wrote that their families opposed the marriage because they belonged to different castes, and that the emotional distress caused by the situation led him to take the extreme step. Post-mortem to be conducted Following the incident, the hospital administration informed the Civil Lines Police Station. Police have initiated an investigation, and the body will undergo a post-mortem examination by a medical board. Further investigation is underway.
