Shubham Goswami, a resident of Jahangirabad, Bhopal, returned to Hinduism on Monday after allegedly being forced to convert to Islam. He had converted some time ago for love but faced pressure and deceit. Shubham performed religious rituals to rejoin Sanatan Dharma at Gufa Mandir (Cave Temple) in Bhopal. Rituals performed at Cave Temple Several ‘purification’ rituals were performed, including Havan (fire ritual), Upanayan Sanskar (sacred thread ceremony), Gurudiksha (initiation by a guru), Mundan (head shaving), Gopujan (cow worship), and ‘purification’ with Gangaajal (holy water from the Ganges). Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Minister Vishvas Sarang was present at the ceremony. Ramprabesh Das Devacharya Maharaj said, “If a person leaves Sanatan Dharma, there is a normal process to return. Rituals like Mundan, wearing Kanthi-Tulsi beads, Tilak, Gopujan, and Havan are performed.” Alleged pressure after conversion Shubham alleged that after converting, he was forced to adopt the name “Aman Khan”. He said he lived according to Islamic customs for four months, eating non-vegetarian food, offering Namaz, and staying in mosques. When the situation worsened, he sought help to return to Hinduism. Complaint to Minister Sarang On November 29, Shubham shared his story during Minister Sarang’s Jan Darshan programme. He claimed he was pressured into conversion, trapped in a “love-jihad,” fed beef, and sent to a Jamaat. Based on his complaint, the police took action, and three accused are now in jail. Background: Meeting and pressure Shubham met a Muslim girl in late 2022. At first, the relationship was normal. Later, her family allegedly pressured him to convert. False cases were filed against him, and he spent time in jail. Threats were made that his family would be harmed if he refused to convert. Life in a Muslim neighbourhood Shubham said he lived in a Muslim area away from his home for three years. He claimed he almost cut ties with his family and lost his job. “The biggest pressure was losing my identity,” he said. “They forced me to stop being Shubham and call myself Aman Khan.” Rejoining Sanatan Dharma With the help of religious leaders, Shubham completed the rituals and returned to Hinduism. His story highlights issues of alleged forced conversion and the challenges faced by individuals in such situations.
