In Balaghat, a young woman was tricked by a fraudster who claimed she would be arrested. The scammer told her she had watched obscene videos on her mobile, and an FIR was filed against her. Fearing arrest, she transferred Rs 35,000 to the fraudster over two days. The cyber police have now begun investigating the case. Fake call from ‘Crime Branch’ The victim is a BA second-year student. On Monday, she received a call from an unknown number. The caller claimed, “I am from the police crime branch. An FIR has been registered against you for watching obscene films on your mobile. Police are coming to arrest you.” The woman became scared and begged the caller to help her avoid arrest. Extortion through QR code The caller told her that to avoid arrest, she had to transfer money. He sent a QR code to her WhatsApp and asked her to pay. She was also instructed not to tell anyone and not to pick up calls for the next 30 minutes. Rs 35,000 transferred in 17 transactions Over two days, the fraudster made her transfer Rs 35,000 in 17 separate transactions to his bank account. On Wednesday, he called again asking for another Rs 10,000. The woman did not have the money. She approached her elder brother for help. Brother suspects and cyber police involved Seeing his sister troubled, the brother became suspicious and asked her what had happened. She told him the full story. The brother took the woman to the police station and filed a complaint at the Cyber Nodal Police Station. Cyber police begin investigation The Balaghat cyber police have started searching for the fraudsters. The case is now under investigation.
