Following the deaths of 17 children in Chhindwara due to poisonous cough syrups, the administration in Madhya Pradesh has intensified its actions. On Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) team conducted raids in Bhopal’s pharmaceutical market to track down banned cough syrups. The government had recently imposed a ban on two specific syrups—Respifres D and ANF Cough Syrup. During the raid, the FDA team searched multiple pharmacies and confiscated bottles of the prohibited products. Samples collected and bottles seized The FDA sealed 10 bottles for laboratory testing and seized an additional 80 bottles. Preliminary tests revealed dangerously high levels of Diethylene Glycol, a toxic chemical, in cough syrups such as Re Life and Respifres TR. Earlier reports reveal contaminated syrups Investigations by the Madhya Pradesh Food and Drug Administration had previously tested 19 syrup samples, of which three were found to be substandard and unsafe for consumption. Among these, Coldrif Cough Syrup was manufactured in Tamil Nadu, while Re Life and Respifres TR were produced in Gujarat. The FDA has warned pharmacies and distributors to strictly comply with the ban and hand over any remaining stock of these dangerous syrups. Authorities continue to monitor the supply chain closely to prevent further health hazards. This crackdown comes as part of the state government’s intensified measures following a surge in child deaths linked to adulterated cough syrups, aiming to prevent a repeat of the tragedy.
