Doctors of the Super Speciality Hospital, MGM Medical College, have given a new lease of life to a 29-year-old patient who had been living with an air gun pellet lodged in his heart for more than a year. The rare and highly complex surgery has been hailed as a landmark achievement in the hospital’s cardiothoracic care. A year of silent pain The patient had been suffering from persistent pain on the left side of his chest ever since he was assaulted with an air gun last year. Despite approaching several hospitals in Indore, he was denied surgical intervention, as the case was deemed too risky. The embedded foreign bodies, two needles inside the heart’s left ventricle and another in the chest wall, made the operation a high-stakes gamble. Diagnosis revealed the hidden threat When the patient came to MGM Super Speciality Hospital, doctors conducted a series of investigations. A 2D echo confirmed a metallic foreign body lodged in the left ventricle, while a CT scan showed additional foreign bodies in the mediastinum and left pleura. The findings underscored the urgency of surgery but also the extreme technical challenges involved. Five-hour marathon surgery After detailed counselling and taking informed consent, the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) team led by Dr. Sumit Pratap Singh took up the case. The operation stretched for over five hours as surgeons worked with meticulous precision to avoid damaging the delicate structures of the heart. Multidisciplinary effort behind success The surgery was a coordinated team effort. Alongside Dr. Singh, the team included Dr. Ankur Goel and Dr. Pramesh Jain, with anesthesia support from Dr. Nimish Jain and Dr. Usha. Perfusionist Krishna Kant and OT staff members Pratibha, Monika, Honey, Chetan, Brij, and Swati also played critical roles. Support from the hospital’s Cardiology, Radiology, Anesthesia, and IHBT Blood Bank departments proved invaluable in ensuring the procedure’s success. Patient on the road to recovery Following the surgery, the patient has been mobilized and is showing encouraging signs of recovery. Doctors say that with timely follow-up and rehabilitation, he can look forward to a normal life, something he had almost given up hope for after a year of rejection and uncertainty.
