Read the report Factory worker’s story was different Life in Mandideep, the industrial town near Bhopal, begins early as thousands of factory workers leave home with lunchboxes every morning. But the story of one worker was different. At his rented two-room home, equipped with a TV, fridge, cooler and other essentials, his wife and two daughters recalled his relentless struggle. She said he would come home only to collect his lunchbox and have tea. He worked at Crompton in Mandideep, earning about ₹17,000 with overtime, and had recently taken a second job as a security guard at Amazon’s delivery office in Bhopal for ₹10,000 a month. His first salary from the new job, due on 27 May, was meant to cover instalments for the fridge, cooler and bed. Left his village after mother’s second marriage His wife said he faced hardships from childhood. His father died when he was 15, after which his mother remarried and left him behind. He moved to Satlapur in Mandideep with his maternal uncle and began working as a factory labourer. The couple later married and had three children. For the past 21 years, he had worked in Mandideep, determined to give his children a better life. His elder daughter studies in Class 11, the younger in Class 8 and his son in Class 6. Despite high fees, he enrolled all three in private schools. Rising prices and a modest income made it difficult to run the household on one salary. Took second job for his children His wife said he was deeply worried about the children, which is why he started a second job that month. On 24 May, after returning home soaked in the rain and having consumed alcohol, she asked him not to go for his night shift. He replied that the cool air would sober him up. Their son wrapped both his mobile phones in a cloth before he left for work on his motorcycle. After every night shift, he usually returned by 6.30 am, got ready within an hour and left for his day job. His wife would keep tea and his lunchbox ready, but that morning he never came home. One phone was switched off while the other kept ringing, so she assumed he had gone straight to work. Missing report filed after a day of calls She kept calling throughout the day. When there was no response at 11 am or 2 pm, she went to Satlapur police station with a relative at around 5 pm and filed a missing person’s report. Police searched for him but found no trace. After five days of waiting and repeated visits to the station, officers took the family to identify a body on 30 May. She recognised her husband by his clothes, as his face had been badly crushed. ‘I don’t know how we will survive now’ His wife said she was brought to the police station after identifying the body and later learnt that the murder accused had also been brought there. She tried to confront him but was stopped by police. She said her husband had no enemies and worked 12-hour shifts at two jobs only to support his children. His first salary from the new job, meant for loan instalments and school fees, never came. The family had only recently managed to build a small home after years in a slum. Now, surviving has become uncertain, and she wonders how she will raise her two daughters and son.
