Ahead of implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Madhya Pradesh, the state-level committee sought public feedback and, as of Tuesday, received nearly 9,50,000 suggestions. Of these, around 8,90,000—approximately 93%—favoured the introduction of the UCC. In addition to individual responses, nearly 2,000 organisations representing various sectors submitted technical and institutional recommendations, which are currently under review. 71% of muslim women back the UCC The consultation data revealed a notable gender divide within the Muslim community. Out of 44,000 suggestions received from Muslims, 29,000 came from men and 15,000 from women. Among Muslim men, only 11,000 respondents (38%) supported the UCC. In contrast, 10,500 out of 15,000 Muslim women—about 71%—expressed support for the proposed law. The figures indicate that a significant number of Muslim women favour legal reforms aimed at promoting gender equality and strengthening social protections. Strong backing from Hindu community Support for the UCC was especially high among Hindus. Of the 520,000 Hindu men who submitted suggestions, 490,000 (95%) endorsed the proposal. Similarly, 360,000 out of 370,000 Hindu women (97%) supported the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code. Across all religious communities, women showed broad support, with 380,000 out of 400,000 female respondents (95%) backing the proposal. Participation from transgender community The consultation process also reflected gender diversity. Of the total submissions, approximately 400,000 (42%) came from women and 550,000 (58%) from men. More than 100 transgender individuals also shared their views with the committee. Experts cite legal and social protections as key factors According to observers, the relatively high level of support among Muslim women may be driven by expectations of stronger legal safeguards on issues such as equal rights in ancestral property, restrictions on polygamy, the abolition of triple talaq, and provisions related to maintenance and financial support. The consultation findings suggest that many women view the UCC as a potential mechanism for advancing legal rights, gender equality, and social security.
