The Madhya Pradesh government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the Jabalpur cruise accident in which 13 people lost their lives. A one-member inquiry commission has been constituted under the chairmanship of retired High Court judge Justice Sanjay Dwivedi. According to a notification issued by the General Administration Department on Sunday, the commission has been formed under Section 3 of the State Government Inquiry Commissions Act, 1952. The commission has been directed to investigate the incident on five specific points and submit its findings to the state government. Inquiry to focus on 5 key areas Report must be submitted within 3 months The government notification stated that the Judicial Inquiry Commission has been given three months to complete the probe. The commission will submit its report to the state government within three months from the date of publication of the notification in the official gazette. 13 people died in Bargi Dam cruise accident The accident took place on April 30 when a cruise sank in the Bargi Dam near Jabalpur. A total of 13 people lost their lives in the incident, including eight women, four children and one man. Rescue operations continued for nearly 60 hours before all bodies were recovered from the water. Action against few officials Following the accident, Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav visited the site and also met the families of the victims. After the Chief Minister’s visit, the government initiated action against several officials and staff members linked to the cruise operation. The services of cruise pilot Mahesh Patel, helper Chhotelal Gond and ticket counter in-charge Brijendra were terminated with immediate effect. At the same time, Sunil Maravi, manager of Hotel Maikal Resort and Boat Club Bargi, was suspended for negligence in duty. Regional Manager Sanjay Malhotra was attached to headquarters, and a departmental inquiry was initiated against him. Meanwhile, a separate committee has also been formed to investigate the primary cause of the accident.
