A special conference of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation Council was held on Thursday at the headquarters near ISBT. Councillors from both the ruling party and the opposition discussed the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan’ Act and passed the resolution unanimously. A total of 52 BJP councillors attended the meeting, while only 10 out of 20 Congress councillors were present. Leader of Opposition Sabista Zaki reached the venue after the singing of Vande Mataram. At the time of the song, only five Congress councillors were present. Municipal Corporation President Kishan Suryavanshi inaugurated the conference. The proposal was moved by MIC member Sushma Bavisa. Five more Congress councillors joined about 10 minutes after the meeting began. Municipal Corporation Commissioner Sanskriti Jain did not attend the conference. No woman officer was present at the meeting. Kishan Suryavanshi said the conference was organised to discuss the provisions of the Act, with a focus on participation of women councillors. He added that the state is observing ‘Nari Shakti Vandan’ fortnight from April 10 to April 25, during which similar programmes are being held. The Urban Administration Department had directed all urban bodies to hold special conferences during this period.
