An inter-state theft gang operating in the style of the Bollywood film Bunty or Babli has been busted in Gwalior. The accused were involved in a series of thefts across multiple cities, targeting specific areas repeatedly. Police have so far solved 7 theft cases in Maharajpura and found leads in 3 more cases in Bahodapur. Mastermind with criminal history across states The gang’s leader, Arvind Rajak (32), had already committed 15 thefts in Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh). He was released from jail in November 2025 after serving 19 months, only to resume criminal activities. The gang is believed to have carried out 57 thefts across more than 12 cities in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat. Lavish lifestyle despite modest appearance Although Arvind maintained a poor appearance, investigations revealed a starkly different lifestyle. He frequently traveled by flight to cities like Ahmedabad and recently purchased a luxury car worth around ₹18 lakh entirely in cash. Police recovered a photo of a black Kia Seltos from his wife Jyoti’s mobile phone and are verifying purchase details with dealers. “Good morning” message from UP inspector raises questions During the investigation, police found a “Good Morning” message on Jyoti’s phone sent by an inspector from Uttar Pradesh. Authorities are now probing the nature of this connection. Limited cooperation during interrogation Despite the scale of their crimes, the accused are giving limited responses during questioning, indicating a highly cautious and experienced modus operandi. Lawyers arrive for bail after arrest After their arrest, six High Court lawyers arrived at the police station seeking bail for Arvind. They attempted to argue legal points, but police action was found valid, and no immediate relief was granted. Targeted thefts and Criminal strategy The gang conducted reconnaissance of empty houses and carried out thefts at night, stealing gold, silver jewelry, and cash. Most crimes were committed in Jhansi and Kanpur, with several also reported in Gwalior and other districts. Background and Motive Arvind, originally from Antari near Gwalior, told police he wanted to build a luxurious house on his plot there. He claimed financial strain due to medical expenses for his father and brother as the reason behind his crimes. Criminal records and Seizures Police have recovered stolen goods worth approximately ₹20 lakh so far and are investigating further investments made using stolen money.
