In Part-1 of Madhya Pradesh Crime Files, you read that on February 3, 2021, some children went towards the jungle while playing in the Dhimrakheda area of Katni district. There they noticed scattered bones. Upon going closer, they found a skeleton. The children informed the village and soon this news reached the police through the Kotwar. It soon became clear that this skeleton belonged to a woman named Rukmani Maravi who had mysteriously disappeared three months ago. A missing person report had also been filed. To confirm that the skeleton was indeed Rukmani’s, police conducted a DNA test which came back positive. During the investigation of the case, police found that besides her husband Naresh, Rukmani also had a relationship with a villager named Puran. She had eloped with Puran twice. When she eloped the second time, she never returned. Police suspected both Puran and husband Naresh, but as the investigation progressed, the story took twists. Who was Rukmani’s killer? Read Crime Files Part-2 Police had three suspects
Police interrogated both Naresh and Puran multiple times, but no concrete leads were found. Police suspected Naresh whether he had eliminated his wife due to social stigma? At the same time, there was suspicion on Puran that Rukmani was pressuring him for marriage, and he might have killed her to get rid of this pressure. Police were also working on a third theory – whether there was another character in this story that no one had noticed yet? Both Puran and Naresh seemed right in their respective positions and there appeared to be no direct motive for murder from them. Twenty days had passed and the police had nothing. It seemed that this case would also remain buried in unsolved files. Suspicion points to a new person
When the investigation was going nowhere, the police decided to talk to the villagers again. During this time, a villager named Janardan provided information that proved to be the turning point in this case. He revealed that a village panchayat meeting was also held regarding Rukmani’s elopement incident. In that panchayat, Rukmani had loudly declared in front of everyone that she would not live with her husband, but only with her lover Puran. Janardan mentioned that along with many village elders, there was another woman present at that panchayat who was quietly observing and listening to everything – she was Puran’s first wife, Sammo Bai. This was a new and important clue. When the police gathered more information about Sammobai, they found that she was extremely angry about Rukmani coming to live in her husband’s house. Now the police’s needle of suspicion was firmly fixed on Sammobai. She had the strongest motive for murder – jealousy and desperation to save her home. Husband Naresh also confirmed that Sammobai was so troubled by this relationship that she once even went to the police station to file a report against Rukmani. A confession and the truth of the murder night
Police took Sammobai into custody and began interrogation. Initially, she broke down crying and claimed her innocence. But as the police’s questioning intensified, her wall of lies began to crumble. Finally, the story she told left even the police officers stunned. Sammo explained, when Rukmani came to live in my house against the panchayat’s decision, my life became difficult. My husband spent day and night with her. She would even sleep with my husband at night. One night I caught them together… I couldn’t tolerate it. At that moment, I decided that either she would live or I would. She further explained, one day my husband had gone out for some work. Only Rukmani and I were alone at home. We had another fight over this. She taunted me that Puran was now only hers. My blood started boiling. Brother helped in disposing of the body
After the murder, Sammo became terribly scared. She couldn’t understand what to do with the body now. She immediately called her brother Shiv Kumar. She told her brother everything and asked for help in disposing of the body. The brother supported his sister to save her. That night, both siblings together packed Rukmani’s body in a sack. Taking advantage of the darkness, they took the body to a jungle near Banjari Mata Nala, about a kilometer away from the house. There they dug a 4 to 5 feet deep pit in a ditch and buried Rukmani’s body in it. While returning, Sammo hid her blood-stained clothes and the axe used in the murder in a bush near the field. Brother acquitted, Sammo gets life imprisonment
She was wrong. After about a month, wild animals smelled the pit, dug it up and ate the body after pulling it out. Because of this, the skeleton came to the surface and children spotted it. After Sammo Bai’s confession, the police also recovered the axe used in the murder and blood-stained clothes from the bushes based on her identification. Police arrested Sammobai for murder and presented her in Katni District Court, along with her brother Shivkumar who was charged with helping destroy evidence and dispose of the body. The case proceeded in court. The prosecution presented solid evidence against Sammo (murder weapon, blood-stained clothes, confession and circumstantial evidence). However, they could not present any direct evidence against Shiv Kumar that could prove he was involved in the murder. On January 13, 2025, the Katni District Court delivered its historic verdict. The court acquitted Shiv Kumar giving him the benefit of doubt.
