The 90-degree Ashbagh bridge in Bhopal, whose flawed design sparked nationwide criticism of Madhya Pradesh authorities, is now under investigation. Government sources say major action is likely against engineers, from the chief engineer to field staff, even if they are reinstated. A three-member team, formed at the state level, recently submitted its report. It revealed that the pillars meant to support the girders were supposed to be round but were made rectangular, like walls. Officials also ignored a letter from the Railways in April 2024 requesting pillar design at the curve. Preliminary action has been taken against two chief engineers, Sanjay Khande and GP Verma, along with EE Shabana Razzak, AE Sanul Saxena, and engineers Javed Shakeel, Ravi Shukla, and Umesh Mishra. All accused engineers have been asked to submit their responses. The investigation was conducted by ENC KPS Rana, MP-RDC CE Gopal Singh, and PWD Deputy Secretary Rajesh Kagra. Major Findings: The report will also be sent to the Railways to ensure accountability at their end. A revised design has been prepared and sent for approval, with deficiencies being rectified by the PWD bridge division. Bhaskar Expert It’s not that 90-degree bridges aren’t built, but curves should be correct It’s not that 90-degree bridges don’t exist. They are built in the country, but the only mistake is that a smooth turn (curve) wasn’t provided. Railways could also be at fault here. When the design is prepared, both Railways and PWD sign off on it. If they signed earlier, they are also responsible. -Akhilesh Agarwal, Former ENC, PWD Post navigation FIR filed against former BJP MLA’s wife:Police allege attack and firing in a lease dispute, while MLA claims villagers are pressuring him for illegal extortion MP Evening Wrap:’Sab ka vikas hoyega’, Sitharaman’s message to citizens on Budget 2026; black tomatoes become ‘black gold’ for Betul farmers more
