Neck slit by grinder, MYH doctors save life:Separate airway created, breathing and food pipe repaired

Doctors at MY Hospital (MYH) gave a new lease of life to 38-year-old Sohan, who was critically injured after his neck was partially severed by a grinder machine while cutting iron rods at home. Following a complex surgery and 14 days of treatment, Sohan made a full recovery and was discharged on Friday along with his family members. The accident occurred on January 17. Sohan, a resident of Gokul Nagar and son of Pannalal, was cutting iron rods at home when the grinder slipped and struck his neck. The injury was severe, damaging both his windpipe and food pipe. His family rushed him to MY Hospital in a critical condition. Complex emergency surgery saves patient with severe neck injury Given the seriousness of the injury, doctors acted swiftly under the hospital’s emergency services. A medical team, working under the guidance of Dr Sudarshan Odia from the surgery department, carried out immediate surgery. The doctors successfully repaired and reconnected both the windpipe and the food pipe, saving the patient’s life. Remained in ICU for 5 days Medical College Dean Dr Arvind Ghanghoria said the patient was brought to the hospital in an extremely critical condition. As he was struggling to breathe, doctors created a temporary alternate airway to help him breathe and admitted him to the ICU. He remained under intensive care for five days, during which he was given five units of blood. After his condition improved, the patient was shifted to the general ward and oral feeding was started. On the tenth day of treatment, the breathing tube was removed, following which his voice returned to normal.
