A woman who had filed a rape complaint against Rajat Sharma, son of Shivpuri Municipal Chairperson Gayatri Sharma, attempted to end her life on Wednesday.
According to the information, she consumed around 45 sleeping pills and rat poison. The victim is currently under treatment at Shivpuri Medical College and remains under close medical supervision. Background of the case According to reports, the victim and Rajat Sharma had been in a long-term relationship. On 14 April 2025, she lodged a complaint at the Kotwali police station. After several follow-ups, the police registered an FIR against Rajat Sharma on 30 April, including charges of rape and other sections. Approximately a month later, Rajat obtained bail from the High Court. Mental harassment for seven months The young woman wrote a six-page suicide note, in which she stated that she had endured mental harassment for the past seven months. She held Gayatri Sharma, her husband Sanjay Dubey, and Rajat Sharma responsible for her deteriorating mental state. Allegations of false promises and threats In the note, the victim alleged that she had been trapped by false marriage promises. She claimed Gayatri Sharma was aware of her relationship with Rajat and had initially given assurances about marrying her into the family. Later, she discovered that Rajat and his family had arranged his engagement with another woman, while she was being misled. She further claimed that on 10 April, after speaking with Rajat, she visited Gayatri Sharma, who allegedly threatened her with death and verbally abused her in the presence of Rajat.
Denial of justice and public humiliation On 14 April, the victim waited for five hours at the police station, but her complaint was not registered. Meanwhile, Rajat’s engagement was celebrated publicly. She also alleged that her family faced humiliation when they met Rajat’s family on 15 April at a factory, where political influence and false assurances were allegedly used to pressure her to withdraw the complaint. Alleged extortion and threats The suicide note claims that Gayatri Sharma and her husband pressured the victim to withdraw the case in exchange for Rs 50 lakh. The victim stated that threats were made through politicians, retired officials, and the police administration. Appeal for justice The victim expressed that repeated harassment over seven months left her mentally broken. She appealed for justice, addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, and Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. Current status The police have seized the suicide note and are recording the victim’s statement. Further investigation and legal action are underway.
