The Indore Municipal Corporation has renamed the Agra–Bombay Road within its municipal limits as Atal Bihari Marg, honouring Bharat Ratna and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The decision was taken unanimously at a Mayor-in-Council (MIC) meeting held on Thursday. Decision taken under Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav’s chairmanship The MIC meeting was chaired by Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav, who said the move was aimed at giving a permanent civic tribute to Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s contribution to nation-building. The decision coincides with Vajpayee’s 101st birth anniversary and marks the first major initiative by the civic body after the completion of his birth centenary year. AB Road: Indore’s historic lifeline The Agra–Bombay Road, commonly known as AB Road, is one of Indore’s most prominent arterial corridors and has played a crucial role in the city’s expansion and urban planning. The stretch later also became the route for the city’s Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS). Following the MIC decision, the road will now be officially referred to as Atal Bihari Marg in all municipal records, documents and signage within city limits. Proposal to rename entire Agra–Bombay Road The MIC has also decided that the Indore Municipal Corporation will send a formal proposal to the Madhya Pradesh government and the Government of India, recommending that the entire Agra–Bombay Road be renamed Atal Bihari Vajpayee Marg. Civic officials clarified that since the highway extends beyond municipal jurisdiction, the final decision on renaming the full stretch rests with the state and central governments. Honouring Vajpayee’s democratic and strategic legacy Bhargav said the decision reflects Vajpayee’s enduring legacy as a statesman who strengthened democratic institutions, redefined good governance and elevated India’s stature globally. His leadership during the Pokhran nuclear tests and his role in shaping a strong and constructive opposition remain defining chapters of modern Indian politics. Connectivity as the backbone of development Mayor also highlighted Vajpayee’s vision of connectivity, under which major road networks were developed to link cities with villages and panchayats. Renaming one of Indore’s most important roads after him symbolises that development philosophy and keeps his vision alive in public memory. A permanent civic tribute Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav congratulated all MIC members for the unanimous decision, describing it as a lasting and meaningful honour to a leader whose ideas continue to guide India’s development journey. MIC members said the initiative is intended to ensure that Vajpayee’s contribution to the nation remains embedded in Indore’s civic landscape.
