Four newborn quadruplets born in Junnardeo lost their lives shortly after birth in Chhindwara district. Two of the infants died en route while being referred to the district hospital, while the remaining two passed away at the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of Chhindwara District Hospital. The mother, Gunno, a resident of Roradhekni Mal village, survived the delivery and is reported to be in stable condition. Premature birth and low birth weight The quadruplets were born prematurely in the seventh month of pregnancy. According to SNCU nodal officer Dr Anshul Lamba, the babies were critically underweight and underdeveloped. “The baby girl weighed 600 grams, while the baby boy weighed only 350 grams. Their lungs were not fully developed, which made breathing impossible,” Dr Lamba explained. Despite continuous medical efforts, the girl died late Monday night, while the boy passed away early Tuesday morning between 3:30 am and 4 am. The other two newborns, weighing approximately 580 grams and 600 grams, died during referral to the district hospital due to severe respiratory distress. Challenges of multiple pregnancy Doctors noted that while low-birth-weight cases are common in Junnardeo, newborns usually weigh around 2 kg. In this case, carrying four foetuses prevented proper development, leaving the lungs and other vital organs too underdeveloped to support life. Medical team worked tirelessly A full team, including Civil Surgeon Sushil Dubey, Child Specialist Dr. Pawan Nadurkar, and RMO Dr. Harshvardhan Kudhape, worked tirelessly to save the newborns. However, their extremely low weights made survival impossible despite medical interventions. Safe delivery amidst complications Due to the mother’s critical condition, doctors conducted the delivery at Junnardeo Hospital itself. The team, led by BMO Dr. Suresh Nagvanshi and Dr. Roma Mulchandani, ensured a safe delivery for the mother, who is now stable. All four newborns were referred to Chhindwara District Hospital due to their fragile state, but none could survive.
