Bhopal set a record for the world’s longest sandwich on Sunday. The Institute of Hotel Management (IHM), Bhopal, prepared a sandwich measuring 269.9 feet in length and about 8 inches in width. It was made in 7 minutes and 26 seconds. The event was held in the presence of the Limca Book of World Records team, and the record has been provisionally registered. Final confirmation is expected in two to two-and-a-half months. The sandwich was prepared on December 14 and drew attention from onlookers, who gathered to watch the record attempt. The 269.9-foot-long sandwich stood out for its size and speed of preparation, making it a notable moment for the city. 300-foot table set up for preparation According to IHM Bhopal Principal Dr Rohit Sarin, the experiment is special not only for the city but also for the country. A 300-foot-long table was arranged to prepare the sandwich. Bread loaves measuring 24 inches each were joined using specially prepared edible glue, forming a single, uniform bread strip of 269.9 feet. Focus on taste and quality Maintaining taste and quality on such a large scale was a major challenge. The sandwich used three types of lettuce, capsicum, three varieties of bell peppers, olives, jalapenos and five to six types of spreads. The organisers said this effort makes the record unique. Focus on building confidence, not records Dr Sarin said the aim of the initiative was not only to create a record, but to build confidence among students and faculty. The exercise was meant to show that tasks which appear difficult can be achieved through planning and teamwork. He said the experience would encourage creativity and strengthen team spirit among students. Cooking as a form of service The IHM Bhopal principal said cooking is not just a profession, but a way to serve people. In the hospitality industry, guests are treated as God, and serving them is a core value. Such events are organised to instil this sense of responsibility and service among students. Strong bond with the institute Dr Sarin is an alumnus of IHM Bhopal and completed his studies there in 1994. He said it is important for students to stay connected with the institute’s history and achievements. IHM Bhopal has earlier entered the Limca Book of Records for making sandwiches measuring 100 feet and 223 feet in length. Maintaining uniform taste was the main challenge Dr Sareen said ensuring the same taste throughout the long sandwich was the biggest challenge. To achieve this, vegetables were cut in uniform sizes and the same recipe and ingredients were used at every stage. The sandwich included four to five types of sauces, assorted salads, purple cabbage, three varieties of bell peppers, onions, olives and jalapenos. Two months of preparation, teamwork key The exercise gave students professional-level experience and helped build confidence. Dr Sarin said such an effort is not possible without teamwork. Preparations for the event had been underway for the past two months. Limca record approval awaited The Limca Book of World Records team supervised the event and recorded the entire process on video. According to Dr Sarin, the record has been provisionally registered. Final approval is expected in two to two-and-a-half months. The sandwich measured 269.9 feet and was prepared in 7 minutes and 26 seconds. Students divided into six teams Students were divided into six teams for the preparation. Each team was assigned a section of about 40 feet. Dr Rohit Sarin has earlier set several records. In 2016, he prepared a 100-foot-long sandwich, and in 2017 in Jalandhar, he set a record by making 228 omelettes in five minutes.
