A case of expired bread being served to passengers as part of breakfast came to light on Saturday morning in the 12002 New Delhi–Rani Kamalapati Shatabdi Express travelling from Delhi to Bhopal. Around 74 passengers in the C-4 coach, including small children, were served bread packets with a ‘use by’ date of July 10, 2026. Most passengers had already eaten the bread before noticing the date printed on the packet, raising concerns over possible food poisoning. Passengers claimed that the issue was not limited to just one coach. Catering packets kept outside the coach also contained bread with the same expiry date. This has raised concerns that expired bread may have been served to passengers in several coaches of the train. After the incident, several passengers filed complaints through the Rail Madad app and the online Consumer Commission portal. Passengers noticed expiry date after eating bread Pranav, a senior analyst travelling from Delhi to Bhopal, said that all passengers were served bread as part of breakfast in the morning. Most of them had already eaten it when a passenger sitting behind noticed the ‘use by’ date printed on the packet and informed others that the bread had expired. Following this, Pranav immediately registered a complaint on the Rail Madad app. Another passenger, Ashok Kalia, said he was also served bread with the same date during breakfast. He said that if such negligence had come to light today, it was difficult to know how many times passengers may have been served expired food items in the past. He added that such incidents weaken passengers’ trust in the railway catering system. IRCTC official puts responsibility on Northern Railway IRCTC regional officer Manoranjan Binkar said that the train belongs to Northern Railway and the food is loaded from there. He did not give a clear response regarding any local-level investigation or action. According to railway arrangements, the responsibility for operating the Shatabdi Express and onboard catering lies with the concerned railway zone. At present, after passengers’ complaints, demands have been raised for an investigation and fixing accountability. Passengers have demanded strict action against those responsible and stronger quality checks in the railway catering system. Questions were also raised over Shatabdi food quality a day earlier On July 10, a passenger travelling in the 12001 Shatabdi Express (Bhopal to Delhi) had also raised questions about food quality and quantity by tagging the Railway Minister, IRCTC and concerned officials on social media. The passenger alleged that while the full fare was being charged, the caterer had reduced the quantity of food served. Complaints regarding Shatabdi’s catering service on two consecutive days have now raised questions over the quality of the railway food system.
