Disha (name changed), an aspiring model, was asleep. Her mother was in the kitchen, her father had stepped out to get milk, and her younger sister was still in bed. None of them imagined that trouble had travelled 800 km to find its way straight into Disha’s bedroom. Suddenly, a shadow entered her room. Before she could understand anything, a man stood over her, pointing a country-made pistol at her head. Her sleep broke to the sight of death inches away. She tried to scream, but his threat choked her voice instantly. Door locked from inside; family helpless outside The young man’s face burned with rage.
“Don’t shout! You ruined my life by filing a complaint. I went to jail because of you. My family married off my younger sister in haste. Today this story will end,” he growled. The man was Rohit Singh ‘Regal’, who had followed her all the way from Aligarh to Bhopal. When Disha tried to run, Rohit caught her and locked the door from inside. Hearing her screams, her family ran to the bedroom. “Mom… Rohit is here!”
Those words froze the family in terror. Her mother pleaded from outside, “Beta, please leave just the way you came. We won’t tell the police anything.”
But Rohit refused to open the door. Sensing danger, Disha’s father immediately called the colony president Dilip Singh and the police. Within minutes, residents gathered outside the flat. Police arrived soon after, but Rohit barricaded the door using a heavy box and other items. ‘Call the media’: Drama turns into a live national spectacle Two hours passed. Rohit had only one demand:
“Call the media. I will talk only to them.” Within minutes, OB vans and reporters surrounded the building. TV channels flashed:
“Breaking News: Model held hostage in Bhopal by obsessed lover.” Flat No. 503 had turned into a live crime scene, and by 9 am, the case had gripped the entire state. Rohit began giving live statements to reporters over the phone. He was no longer just a criminal — he had become the centre of a real-time drama playing out on television screens nationwide. Senior police officers rushed to the spot. Rohit demanded one particular officer — SI Govind Singh Rajput. Rajput arrived and tried to reason with him, but Rohit didn’t budge. A crane was called to reach the fifth-floor balcony. SP Rahul Lodha climbed up in the crane basket to negotiate, but Rohit refused to cooperate. He demanded milk and water, which were provided using the crane. When his phone battery died, he asked for a charger.
Police said the charger wouldn’t fit under the door — he would need to open it. The most terrifying twist: Model slashed with scissors When Rohit slightly opened the door with a pistol in one hand and scissors in the other, SI Rajput attempted to grab his gun hand. Rohit retaliated by stabbing the officer with the scissors. “Let go or I will count to three and shoot Disha!” he screamed. In the chaos, Disha tried to escape but failed. Rohit grabbed her and stabbed her repeatedly with scissors, leaving deep wounds on her neck, stomach and legs. She began losing consciousness. He recorded a video of the injured model, forced her to give statements, and sent the clip to media outlets. Forced ‘marriage’ on stamp paper Rohit demanded a stamp paper. Police slid one under the door. He forced Disha to write and sign a declaration of marriage.
He then pushed the paper outside and demanded her parents also sign it.
Terrified and helpless, they signed with trembling hands. But Rohit remained paranoid. “What if the police tear the paper and kill me?” he said. He demanded that the stamp paper “marriage” be broadcast live on television. By now, it was 7 pm — more than 12 hours since the ordeal began.
