A two-day-old baby girl born with a hole in her heart will be airlifted to Mumbai for urgent surgery from Jabalpur. Remarkably, the district health officials opened their office on a public holiday to prepare the necessary documents and arrangements to save her life. This will be the first time in Madhya Pradesh that a newborn is being airlifted for treatment under a government health program. Baby diagnosed with hole in the heart soon after birth The infant, born on Monday afternoon to Satyendra and Shashi Dahiya of Sihora, was one of twins delivered at a local hospital. While the baby boy was found to be healthy, doctors discovered a hole in the baby girl’s heart (cardiac defect). Doctors warned that her condition was critical and could turn fatal without immediate specialist care. The family was advised to shift her to Narayana Hospital in Mumbai for surgery. Office opened on holiday to save newborn’s life The father, Satyendra Dahiya, was in distress. He needed to arrange official documents and permissions urgently, but the day coincided with Guru Nanak Jayanti, a public holiday. When he reached out to Dr. Subhash Shukla, District Manager of the National Child Health Program (RBSK), the officer immediately responded. Dr. Shukla told him, “The office is opening right now, not tomorrow. Bring the documents immediately.” Despite the holiday, Dr. Shukla called in the staff, including clerks and peons, and the office was opened within half an hour. The paperwork for the newborn’s medical transfer was initiated on an emergency basis. District health officials join effort Soon after being informed, Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr. Sanjay Mishra reached the office and reviewed all documents. Once he signed the papers, the process for arranging the baby’s treatment and air transfer was completed. Doctors Dr. Vinita Uppal and Shrey Awasthi coordinated with higher officials to secure an air ambulance, finalizing all necessary documents for transport. Baby to be airlifted to Mumbai for surgery The air ambulance is scheduled to take off on Thursday, transferring the newborn to Narayana Hospital, Mumbai, where a specialized cardiac team will perform surgery. This marks a historic first for Madhya Pradesh, where a two-day-old infant is being airlifted for emergency medical treatment under the government’s health initiative.
