A new six-lane flyover will soon ease traffic congestion at the busy Sukhi Sewaniya junction on the Bhopal Bypass. The foundation stone for the Rs 28 crore project was laid on Monday by Minister-in-Charge Chaitanya Kashyap and MLA Rameshwar Sharma. The 700-meter-long structure will be constructed by the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPRDC) and is expected to be completed within a year. ‘Step toward making Bhopal a metropolitan city’ During the Bhoomi Pujan ceremony, Minister Chaitanya Kashyap said that Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav is committed to transforming Bhopal into a world-class capital city. “Developing Bhopal like major metropolitan cities is part of our larger vision. This flyover is a crucial milestone toward that goal,” he stated. Heavy traffic and frequent accidents prompted the project MLA Rameshwar Sharma noted that the Sukhi Sewaniya intersection—located at the junction of the Bhopal Bypass and the Bhopal-Vidisha road—has long been one of the most congested and accident-prone areas. “Nobody demanded this project from me. But seeing the daily traffic jams and accidents, I took the initiative to request the Chief Minister for the construction of this six-lane flyover,” Sharma said. From four-lane to six-lane — Vision for the future Initially, the proposed flyover was planned as a four-lane structure. However, keeping in mind future traffic growth, Sharma approached the Chief Minister to expand it to six lanes. The same model will also be followed for the upcoming Khajuri flyover on the Bhopal-Indore Road, ensuring smooth traffic movement. Bhopal bypass expansion and railway development plans MLA Sharma also announced that the Bhopal Bypass itself will be upgraded to six lanes, with its Detailed Project Report (DPR) currently under preparation. “With increasing traffic pressure, this expansion has become essential,” he said. He further added that efforts are underway to develop the Sukhi Sewaniya Railway Station into a higher-category station, where superfast and Shatabdi trains can halt in the future. “Rail connectivity is a top priority for this rapidly developing region,” he emphasized. Construction timeline and design According to MPRDC officials, the flyover will be accompanied by one-kilometer-long service roads on both sides to ensure smooth local movement. The entire six-lane structure is expected to be completed within one year.
