Just days before Diwali, the Food Safety Department has seized 2,754 kilograms of unlicensed and improperly labelled sweets from a local firm in Indore. The action comes amid heightened vigilance over food adulteration during the festive season, when the demand for sweets, ghee, and dairy products soars. Officials said the raid was conducted at Ahuja Milk Products, located in Prem Nagar, where large quantities of Rajwadi Sweets and Krishna Halwa were being sold without a food license or proper labelling. The products, sourced from Gujarat-based firm Shri Krishna Barfi Sweets, lacked mandatory packaging details required under food safety norms. Rs 6.9 lakh worth of sweets seized The inspection team found severe irregularities in the product’s labelling and documentation. With no valid license to sell proprietary food items, the department seized 2,754 kilograms of sweets, estimated to be worth Rs 6.9 lakh. Samples of three varieties of Rajwadi Sweets and one of Krishna Halwa were collected and sent to the State Food Testing Laboratory in Bhopal for analysis. Officials suspect adulteration and said legal action would follow once the test reports are received. Second inspection based on complaint In a related inspection, the department also raided Shiv Traders in Siyaganj, acting on a complaint received through the CM Helpline. During the visit, officials collected two samples of ghee for quality testing. Adulteration risk rises during festivals Food safety officers say adulteration peaks during festive seasons when the demand for sweets, mawa, and ghee skyrockets. Unscrupulous traders take advantage of high sales to market substandard or adulterated products. Officials revealed that fake and low-quality ghee is being sold across several city areas, including Palda, Abhishek Nagar, and Babulal Nagar, where small warehouses have been operating in residential lanes. The department has intensified inspections across Indore to ensure only safe and licensed food products reach the market before Diwali.
