Now FASTag users will not need to remove the old sticker affixed to their vehicle’s windshield or get a new physical tag installed to change their bank. They will also not have to change their vehicle registration number. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has launched a new service called OneTag for vehicle owners. This new facility was launched during the ‘Global Fintech Fest 2026’ held in Mumbai. No Need to Close Old Accounts The Old System: Previously, if a FASTag user wanted to switch to a different bank, they had to close their existing tag account. They then had to go through the entire onboarding process again to get a new physical sticker. The New System: Under the new rules, users will no longer need to close their old accounts. A single FASTag sticker will now be portable, allowing users to switch between different banks seamlessly. Zero Impact at Toll Plazas The process of toll tax deduction at toll plazas will remain completely unchanged. Seamless Transit: Drivers will not need to stop their vehicles or follow any new procedures at toll booths. Backend Automation: The National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) system, managed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), will handle the backend transition. It will automatically update the new bank details in the system, ensuring a hassle-free experience for commuters. Environmental Benefits: Less Plastic Waste and Lower Costs The government expects this portability service to significantly reduce the need for manufacturing, dispatching, and re-issuing physical FASTag stickers. This move will not only save operational costs but also help protect the environment by reducing plastic waste. What are RFID and NETC? Radio Frequency Identification (RFID): This is a wireless technology that uses radio waves to read data from the chip embedded in the FASTag sticker. It enables automatic toll collection without requiring the vehicle to stop. National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC): Developed by the NPCI, this is an interoperable platform that connects toll plazas, banks, and vehicle owners across India into a single, unified digital network.
