During the day, the husband-wife relationship was normal, but as night fell, the husband’s loud snoring became a source of tension between them. Disturbed by continuous lack of sleep, the wife decided to get a divorce. She told the family counselor, “He is very good, but I cannot stay awake all night.” According to doctors, patients with snoring and sleep apnea are rapidly increasing due to obesity and changing lifestyles. This problem is not limited to health alone, but is also affecting family and marital life. Experts say that loud snoring should not be ignored by considering it normal. It could be a sign of sleep apnea. In this condition, the oxygen level in the body can drop from 95 percent to 50-60 percent during sleep. This increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. According to Dr. Prakhar Agarwal, a chest and respiratory disease specialist, the number of such patients visiting him has increased from 15-20 per month to 50-60 in the last 10 years. Rising obesity and changing lifestyles are the main reasons behind this. Bhopal’s family counselor Rita Tuli states that cases of marital stress due to snoring are continuously increasing. Recently, a couple’s relationship reached the brink of divorce. In many other cases, couples were advised medical examination and treatment. According to her, both women and men are equally affected by this problem. Risk of heart attack and stroke increases According to Dr. Agarwal, people suffering from sleep apnea have a higher risk of heart attack compared to normal people. This risk can be almost double in those who snore loudly. Lack of oxygen also increases the likelihood of blood clot formation, which can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Snoring is a sign that there is an obstruction somewhere in the airway. Not just the patient, the whole family is troubled According to Dr. Agarwal, snoring affects not only the patient but also the person sleeping with them and the family. Due to loud snoring, others’ sleep is also disturbed. Meanwhile, the patient’s sleep is also frequently interrupted, which can lead to problems like fatigue throughout the day, lack of concentration at work, falling asleep while sitting, irritability, and anger. This also affects family relationships. Bappi Lahiri also had a connection with sleep apnea Dr. Aggarwal stated that sleep apnea was also among the major causes of the death of renowned singer Bappi Lahiri. He said that if not treated in time, the risk of heart attack at night can increase. Singer Armaan Malik has also suffered from sleep apnea. After treatment, he publicly stated that his lifestyle and health had significantly improved. Five-year-old marriage on the verge of breaking up Rita Tuli said that a woman came to her for counseling. The woman said that she had no complaints against her husband and family. Her only problem was that her husband snored very loudly at night, due to which she could not sleep all night. When she complained in the morning, the husband was not ready to admit that he snored. Gradually, the dispute escalated so much that the woman decided to get a divorce. Advice to live separately for three months, then changed decision During counseling, both parties were explained and advised to live separately for three months with the aim of saving the family. After the stipulated time was over, both of them again came for counseling. They said that during this period, they realized each other’s importance. Both agreed that there was no mental or physical harassment in the relationship and that divorcing solely due to snoring would not be right. After this, both decided to live together. Reduce obesity, adopt regular exercise Dr. Prakhar Agarwal advised that people whose Body Mass Index (BMI) is more than 25 should focus on losing weight. Regular exercise, gym, treadmill, yoga, and pranayama like Bhastrika and Bhramari strengthen the respiratory tract. This can reduce the problem of snoring and a drop in oxygen levels. If you snore loudly, you should consult a specialist doctor without delay.
