The India vs England T20I series opener was called off due to heavy rain in Durham on 1 July. Winning the toss and opting to bat first, India could manage to score 189/7 runs in 20 overs as Shreyas Iyer (68) and Abhishek Sharma (59) smashed brilliant half-centuries. Shivam Dube played a crucial quickfire knock of an unbeaten 42 runs off 21 balls. For England, Saqib Mahmood claimed a three-wicket haul (3/33). Soon, towards the end of the first innings, the rain picked up pace and didn’t stop. Umpires eventually called off play in Durham. Kishan also became the new No. 1-ranked T20I batter, dethroning Abhishek. 2) Tom Banton’s flying catch to dismiss Sanju Samson Tom Banton took a splendid catch to dismiss Sanju Samson in the first innings. This happened in the second over itself when Samson, batting on 1, drove the ball aerially towards point. Banton, fielding in the region, took a splendid catch to his right with both his hands. 3) Shivam Dube’s massive six goes out of the park Shivam Dube smashed a massive six, sending the ball out of the ground in the first innings. This happened in the last over of the first innings when Dube hammered a short delivery on the leg-side and sent the ball flying over the deep mid-wicket fence. As the ball cleared the fence, Michael Atherton on commentary also exclaimed that the ball was hit out of the ground. 4) Match cancelled due to rain There was drizzle from the beginning of the match. Despite this, the full 20 overs of play took place in the first innings. However, after that, the rain intensified, and the match could not resume. According to Indian time, the match was declared cancelled at 12:47 AM. With this feat in the 1st T20I, he scripted a new record, hitting the highest individual score by an Indian skipper in a T20I in England. Shreyas hit 68 runs off 47 deliveries, with six fours and one six. The previous highest score by an Indian captain in T20Is in England was by Virat Kohli, who had scored 47 in Cardiff in 2018. 3) Abhishek Sharma: Fastest Indian to score a T20 fifty in England Abhishek has become the fastest Indian to score a T20 fifty in England. Abhishek completed his fifty in just 20 balls. He broke KL Rahul’s 8-year-old record. Rahul had scored a half-century in 27 balls at the Manchester ground in 2018. 4) India’s third consecutive match in Chester-le-Street cancelled No match of India has been completed in Chester-le-Street.
