England’s legendary all-rounder and Test captain Ben Stokes has bid farewell to international cricket. On the fourth day of the Trent Bridge Test against New Zealand, he announced his retirement, surprising the cricket world. In his illustrious 15-year career, Stokes played 279 international matches across all three formats. He played his last white-ball (ODI/T20) match in the 2023 ODI World Cup held in India. With his aggressive batting, lethal bowling, and never-say-die attitude, he changed the way Test cricket was played. Apart from him, South Africa’s Jacques Kallis (13,289 runs, 292 wickets) has achieved this feat. 2. ‘Sixer King’ of Test Cricket The world record for hitting the most sixes in Tests is held by Stokes (138 sixes). He is one of only three batsmen in the world to hit 100+ sixes in Tests. Out of these 138, he has hit 39 sixes against Australia, which is the most sixes hit against any single team in Tests. Stokes is one of only two batsmen in the world to hit 10+ sixes in an innings in both Tests and ODIs. The other player is his coach, Brendon McCullum. 3. Bazball Style – Always Played for a Result, Lowest Draw Percentage -As captain, Stokes led England to victory in 24 out of 44 Tests. He is England’s third captain, after Mike Brearley and Michael Vaughan, whose win percentage is 50+. – Under his captaincy, England scored runs at a run rate of 4.40 per over. This is the only such record among those who have captained in more than 25 Tests. – Only 4.55% of Test matches ended in a draw under Stokes’ captaincy. This is the lowest among those who have captained in at least 25 Test matches. – There have been 14 instances in the history of successfully chasing targets of 350+, out of which Stokes led to victory on two occasions. Chasing 378 against India at Edgbaston and 371 at Headingley. 4. Historic Innings – Second Highest Score at Number Six – Playing at number 6 against South Africa in 2016, Stokes scored 258 runs. This is the second-highest score by a batsman batting at number six or lower, after Don Bradman (270). In this innings, he hit a double century in 163 balls, which is the second-fastest double century in Test history. – Stokes also holds the record for the fastest century (85 balls) at the ‘Lord’s’, the Mecca of Cricket, which he scored against New Zealand in 2015. – An innings of 182 runs against New Zealand in 2023 is the highest score by any England batsman in ODIs. 5.
