A four-month pregnant woman has alleged that her relative kicked her in the stomach during a dispute over land in Jabalpur, resulting in the death of her unborn child. The victim, Jyoti Sahu, remained admitted to Jabalpur Medical College for 13 days following the incident. After being discharged, she approached the Superintendent of Police’s office on Monday, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. A video recorded after the incident has also surfaced, showing the woman crying in pain and pleading for help. Land dispute turned violent According to police and the complainant, the incident took place on June 13 in the Majholi area, around 30 kilometres from the Jabalpur district headquarters. Jyoti Sahu and her husband, Atul Sahu, had been involved in a long-running land dispute with Atul’s maternal uncle, Vijay Sahu, and his family. Atul said that around 30 square feet of land remained disputed after a family partition. He had requested his uncle to let them use the land as his wife was pregnant and they planned to build the entrance to their house there, but no agreement was reached. The disagreement escalated into a physical altercation between the two sides. Woman allegedly attacked after husband left According to Atul Sahu, during the scuffle, his uncle Vijay Sahu fell and sustained injuries after being struck by a water pipe. Atul then took him to Jabalpur for medical treatment. Shortly after reaching the hospital, Atul alleged that his wife called him, saying that his aunt and cousin, Durgesh Sahu, were assaulting her and that she had been kicked in the stomach. He immediately returned home and found Jyoti lying on the ground in severe pain. She was first taken to the Majholi Health Centre and later referred to Jabalpur Medical College due to the seriousness of her condition. Doctors confirm death of unborn child During treatment, doctors informed the family that the four-month-old foetus had died due to the injuries, according to the complainants. Jyoti remained hospitalised from June 13 to June 25 before being discharged. Video shows woman crying in pain A video recorded after the incident has emerged, showing the pregnant woman writhing in pain and calling for help. In the footage, she can be heard saying, “I won’t survive, mother… Please call my father… My baby won’t survive either,” before breaking down in tears and screaming in pain. Victim demands immediate arrest of accused After being discharged from hospital, Jyoti and her husband approached the Jabalpur SP office on Monday and submitted a written complaint to Additional Superintendent of Police Anju Beniwal, seeking immediate action against the accused. Husband alleges delay in arrests Atul Sahu alleged that Majholi police had registered an FIR against his maternal uncle, aunt, and cousin on charges of assault, but none of the accused had been arrested despite several days passing since the incident. He claimed that he had repeatedly visited the police station since June 25 and had also submitted the video as evidence but no concrete action had been taken, prompting the family to approach senior police officials. Police say action will be based on medical report Additional SP Anju Beniwal confirmed that an FIR had already been registered at Majholi Police Station and that the victim had undergone a medical examination. She said the case is under investigation, and further legal action will be taken based on the medical report and evidence collected during the probe. Police have been instructed to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
