In today’s edition of Madhya Pradesh Crime Files – Part 1, we revisit the chilling case that raised serious concerns about tourist safety in some of the state’s most scenic destinations, particularly for young couples travelling together. The story follows a couple who set out to visit Patalpani but vanished without a trace. Six months later, their skeletal remains were discovered buried beneath rocks in a remote gorge after a heated argument between two inmates in a jail unexpectedly led investigators to the gruesome crime scene. The shocking revelation exposed what investigators believed was the work of a dangerous criminal gang that allegedly targeted couples visiting secluded tourist spots. Gang allegedly targeted couples in isolated areas According to the investigation, the gang would keep watch on young couples visiting isolated waterfalls and hilltops around Patalpani. Once they found an opportunity, they allegedly surrounded the victims, robbed them, sexually assaulted women, recorded obscene videos to blackmail them, and threatened them into silence. Police suspect that in some cases, the gang even resorted to murder to eliminate witnesses and conceal their identities. Himanshu and Shreya went missing in November 2017 With the onset of winter in early November 2017, Patalpani and the nearby Mehendi Kund waterfall had become popular attractions for tourists seeking scenic beauty. On the morning of November 6, 2017, Himanshu and Shreya left Mhow for Mehendi Kund to spend time together amid the natural surroundings. However, while exploring the area, the couple suddenly disappeared. As hours passed without any contact, their families grew worried. After unsuccessful attempts to trace them through friends and relatives, a missing persons complaint was filed at a local police station. Extensive search yields no clues Police launched an extensive search operation across Patalpani, Mehendi Kund, and the surrounding forests. Despite days of combing the rugged terrain, investigators found no trace of either Himanshu or Shreya. Months passed without any breakthrough, and the investigation appeared to have reached a dead end. Minor theft leads to major breakthrough In May 2018, four sacks of chickpeas were stolen from a house in Mhow. During the investigation, police arrested a man named Balram and an accomplice, both of whom were later lodged in jail. One night, an argument broke out between the two inmates. During the confrontation, one of them angrily threatened Balram, saying that if he revealed “the Mehendi Kund secret,” Balram would be ruined. Informer alerts police Another inmate, who was reportedly acting as a police informer, overheard the exchange and immediately passed the information to investigators. Station House Officer Hitendra Rathore then subjected the accused to intensive questioning. During the interrogation, references to an unknown incident at Mehendi Kund surfaced, leaving officers stunned. Search at Mehendi Kund reveals human remains When questioned about the cryptic conversation, one of the accused reportedly told investigators to look beneath the rocks in a gorge at Mehendi Kund. Police rushed to the spot and, guided by the accused, descended nearly 50 feet into the ravine. During the search, an officer noticed a shoe lying near a pile of rocks. After clearing the stones, police uncovered two skeletal remains buried underneath. Families identify the victims Although the bodies had decomposed completely, investigators recovered a few personal belongings from the site. Shreya’s father identified a ring still lodged on one of the skeletons, while Himanshu’s brother recognized a shoe found nearby. Police also recovered Shreya’s lunch box from the scene. The discoveries confirmed that the remains belonged to the missing couple. Questions that remained unanswered The gruesome discovery left investigators searching for answers to several critical questions: The answers, investigators believed, lay hidden in the unfolding probe into one of the region’s most disturbing criminal conspiracies.
