An 18-year-old NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) aspirant who went missing after appearing for her undergraduate entrance examination was found dead in the Narmada River in Khargone district. Nikki Yadav, a resident of Talawali Chanda in Indore’s Lasudia area, had left home on Sunday to appear for the NEET-UG examination at a centre in Mhow. However, she did not return home after the exam, prompting her family to report her missing. Body identified through identity card After failing to locate Nikki, her family approached the Bhanwarkuan police station, following which a search operation was launched. On Monday afternoon, police from Karahi police station in Khargone informed Bhanwarkuan police that the body of a young woman had been recovered from the Narmada River and that an identity card found with the body belonged to Nikki. Her family was taken to Khargone, where they identified the deceased. Police are currently treating the case as a suspected suicide, although the exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem examination and further investigation. Last phone call to her mother According to Nikki’s father, Ramanand Yadav, his younger son Shivam had dropped her at the examination centre on Sunday. After completing the exam, Nikki reportedly called her mother using another student’s mobile phone, saying that her own phone had run out of battery and that she would be home shortly. The family lost contact with her after that call and waited until around 10 p.m. before beginning their search. Family alleges delay in police response Nikki’s relatives claimed they visited the police station on Sunday night itself to report her disappearance. However, they alleged that despite waiting for nearly an hour, no immediate assistance was provided. The family then contacted the police control room, but when no concrete action followed, they approached Bhanwarkuan police station again on Monday morning, where a missing person report was formally registered. Dreamed of becoming a doctor Ramanand Yadav said Nikki had appeared for the NEET examination twice before but had been unsuccessful. Determined to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor, she continued preparing for the highly competitive exam. She belonged to an academically accomplished family, with two elder sisters working as software engineers, one brother employed as an engineer, and a younger brother still attending school. Last mobile location traced to Barwaha Police said Nikki’s mobile phone was last traced to the Barwaha area in Khargone district. Investigators are now examining her movements after the examination, the circumstances under which she reached Barwaha, and the status of her mobile phone to establish the sequence of events leading to her death. The family has said they have no information about how or why Nikki travelled to the area where her body was eventually found.
