The doors of the world-famous Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple were opened at 4 AM on Tuesday for the daily Bhasma Aarti, one of the temple’s most revered rituals. The ceremony began with the ritual ablution of Lord Mahakal using Hari-Om water, followed by worship with Panchamrit—a sacred mixture prepared from milk, curd, ghee, sugar, honey, and fruit juices. Lord Mahakal decorated in royal attire After the rituals, Lord Mahakal was adorned in a regal form featuring a silver crescent moon, silver trident (Trishul), silver Tripundra markings, and dry-fruit decorations. The deity was also embellished with a silver Sheshnag crown, a silver skull garland (Mundmala), Rudraksha beads, and fragrant flower garlands, enhancing the grandeur of the morning worship. Special worship of Nandi and offering of Bhog At the Nandi Hall, the ceremonial bathing, meditation, and worship of Nandi were performed. The rituals concluded with the offering of fruits and sweets (bhog) to Lord Mahakal before the commencement of the Bhasma Aarti. Devotees gather for the sacred Bhasma Aarti The Bhasma Aarti was performed amid the resonant sounds of cymbals, manjiras, and damrus, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere inside the temple. A large number of devotees attended the ceremony to seek the blessings of Lord Mahakal. As part of the tradition, bhasma (sacred ash) was ceremonially offered by the Maha Nirvani Akhara. According to long-held beliefs associated with the ritual, after the sacred ash is offered, Lord Mahakal grants devotees a visible manifestation from His otherwise formless divine state.
