After the development of Mahakal Lok, Ujjain is now set to witness another landmark spiritual project. The Madhya Pradesh government plans to develop Sandipani Lok at the historic Sandipani Ashram, the place where Lord Krishna is believed to have received his education along with Balram and Sudama. Spread across nearly five hectares, the project will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹139 crore and is expected to be completed before the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh. Project to be developed under ‘Shri Krishna Pathay Yojana’ The ambitious project will be executed under the state’s Shri Krishna Pathay Yojana, aimed at transforming the educational site associated with Lord Krishna into a major cultural and spiritual destination. Prepared by Ujjain Smart City Limited, the redevelopment project seeks to preserve the city’s rich heritage while using modern technology to connect younger generations with India’s ancient Gurukul tradition. Like Mahakal Lok, a dedicated corridor will also be developed within the Sandipani Ashram complex. The project will feature: Using headphones and VR devices, visitors will be able to learn about the history of Sandipani Ashram, Lord Krishna’s education, and the 64 traditional arts and skills he is believed to have mastered. State’s largest 108-foot statue of Lord Krishna The highlight of Sandipani Lok will be a 108-foot-tall statue of Lord Krishna, expected to become one of the most prominent attractions in the state. The statue’s design will be finalized after technical assessments, including wind tunnel studies and evaluations by engineering experts. Light and Sound show to showcase Krishna’s legacy A large-scale immersive light-and-sound show will be developed within the complex, particularly around the historic Gomti Kund area. The show will narrate: The project will also include smart infrastructure and modern visitor facilities. The historical significance of Sandipani Ashram According to Hindu tradition, Ujjain was known as Avantika Nagari during the Dwapar Yuga. Ancient texts, including the Skanda Purana, state that after defeating King Kansa, Lord Krishna and his brother Balram travelled on foot from Mathura to Ujjain to study under Sage Sandipani. The distance between Mathura and Ujjain is approximately 650 kilometres. It is believed that Krishna was around 11 years old when he arrived at the ashram. Mahakal Lok’s success inspires the new project The state government’s confidence in developing Sandipani Lok has been strengthened by the success of Mahakal Lok at the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple. Since the inauguration of Mahakal Lok by the Prime Minister on October 11, 2022, the number of devotees visiting Ujjain has increased dramatically.
