SC makes TET mandatory for 1.5 lakh MP teachers:Says no compromise on children’s future, grants 1-year extension

More than one and a half lakh teachers in Madhya Pradesh will have to take the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). The Supreme Court, while pronouncing its decision on review petitions filed on Friday, said that it is necessary for teachers to pass the eligibility test for better educational development of children. However, the court gave relief by extending the time limit for passing the exam from 2 years to 3 years. Now, teachers will get a chance to pass TET by August 31, 2028. The Supreme Court upheld the decision to make TET mandatory for in-service teachers in the Anjuman Ishaat-e-Talim Trust case. Earlier, in the order dated September 1, 2025, the court had asked to pass the eligibility test within two years. Now an additional one-year extension has been given. Meanwhile, teacher organizations have expressed displeasure after the decision. DK Singor, state president of the Tribal Welfare Teachers Association, said the organization is reviewing the order. He says that making TET mandatory for old teachers is an injustice to service rights. The Teachers’ Joint Front has also opposed the decision, stating that it will continue the fight on this issue from Parliament to the Supreme Court. The Front has also mentioned filing a curative petition along with demanding an amendment to the RTE Act.
