‘your-father-must-get-angry,-right?’-dhoni-asked-urvil-patel:csk-star’s-joint-fastest-fifty-leaves-family-emotional

A stunning 13-ball half-century by young cricketer Urvil Patel at Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium has become one of the most emotional and talked-about moments of IPL 2026. Urvil’s explosive innings for Chennai Super Kings not only equalled the fastest fifty in IPL history, but also won hearts after he dedicated the knock to his father through a handwritten note shown on live television. The image of Urvil holding the note instantly went viral across social media platforms. But what surprised many was the revelation that even his own father had no idea the note was dedicated to him until photographs began circulating online after the match. In a special interaction with Urvil Patel’s family at their home in Kahipur village in Gujarat’s Mehsana district, his parents opened up about his difficult journey, childhood struggles, emotional setbacks, admiration for MS Dhoni, and the sacrifices behind his rise to the IPL stage. A record-breaking fifty that shocked cricket fans During Chennai’s clash at the iconic Chepauk Stadium, Urvil Patel stunned everyone with a blistering innings, smashing 50 runs in just 13 balls. The innings equalled the joint-fastest half-century in IPL history and immediately put the young batter into the national spotlight. As the crowd erupted in celebration, Urvil pulled out a handwritten note from his pocket, held it toward the cameras, folded his hands and thanked both God and his father. That moment became one of the defining visuals of the IPL season. However, his father Mukesh Patel later revealed that he had absolutely no idea what was written on the paper. “I thought he had written god’s name” Recalling the emotional moment, Mukesh Patel said he was watching the match quietly on his mobile phone after returning midway during Chennai’s innings. “LSG’s openers were batting very well, so after watching two overs, I stopped watching the match. When CSK came to bat, I started watching again. I had muted the volume,” he said. He added that as Urvil continued hitting boundaries all around the ground, the atmosphere became electric. “People were saying Urvil had created a storm and that he was batting brilliantly. When he reached 41 runs in nine balls, I thought if he somehow reaches fifty in 11 balls, I’ll proudly tell everyone at home that he has created T20 history.” Though Urvil eventually reached the milestone in 13 balls instead of 11, his father said the joy remained unforgettable. “When he pulled out the note, I had no idea it was written for me. I thought he must have written something related to God because he deeply believes in faith and always says nothing is possible without God’s blessings.” The truth came to light only after friends and relatives started calling him. “Two or three friends sent me photographs on WhatsApp. That’s when I saw what was written: ‘This is for you, Papa.’ Neither I nor my family knew what was written in that note.” Father and Son Both Broke Down After the Match The emotional impact of the gesture became overwhelming for the family. Mukesh Patel said that after the match, Urvil called him on the phone, but neither of them could speak properly because both became emotional. “When he called me after the match, he showed me the note again. Seeing it made me realise how deeply he feels for me. I became emotional and started crying. Urvil also broke down. I could not continue speaking, so I handed the phone to his mother.” The father added proudly, When a son plays such an innings, pulls out a note, dedicates the record to his father and folds his hands before everyone, any father would feel proud. I am fortunate that Urvil was born in my home. Dhoni’s warm conversation with the family Urvil’s parents also shared details of their memorable interaction with MS Dhoni last year. According to the family, when Chennai visited Ahmedabad for a match, Urvil insisted that his parents must meet Dhoni in person. The family later visited the team hotel where Urvil introduced them to the former CSK captain. Mukesh Patel described Dhoni as humble and extremely grounded. “We saw complete simplicity in Dhoni. That is when we understood why people are so eager to meet him,” he said. He recalled that Dhoni invited the family to sit with him and casually began talking. “Dhoni asked jokingly, ‘Urvil, when you don’t score runs, your father must get angry sometimes, right?’” Mukesh replied, Dhoni sir, Urvil has never given me such a chance. Sometimes when he does not perform well, we call him, but we never ask him about cricket. According to Mukesh, Dhoni was deeply impressed by the response. He further told Dhoni, Urvil is now with you. Whether it is becoming a successful captain or wicketkeeper, it is your responsibility to shape him. Dhoni reportedly smiled and responded: “There is nothing lacking in Urvil. We are preparing him too.” “Dhoni is god for him” Urvil’s father revealed that while his son admired Rahul Dravid during childhood, he later became an ardent admirer of Dhoni. “Urvil considers Dhoni a god of cricket,” his father said. “When Sachin Tendulkar was playing, Urvil was very small. He probably heard people calling Sachin the god of cricket. But Dhoni’s era happened during Urvil’s time.” He added, Dhoni has played cricket in all formats for years. He has immense experience and has won many trophies and awards. That is why Urvil learns a lot from him. According to the family, Urvil himself once wrote publicly that he considers Dhoni his cricketing idol. A childhood spent away from parents Urvil Patel was born in Kahipur village near Vadnagar. His parents were both government school teachers and had to leave the village for work soon after his birth. Because of this, Urvil spent nearly two-and-a-half years away from his parents. “When he was just 11 months old, we had to leave him in the village with relatives because both of us had government jobs,” Mukesh Patel said. Urvil stayed with his uncles in Kahipur village until he became old enough for kindergarten. Only then did his parents bring him to Palanpur. His father currently works as a school supervisor, while his mother Gitaben teaches in a primary school. From fast bowler to wicketkeeper-batter Though the cricket world now knows Urvil as a wicketkeeper-batter, his journey actually began as a fast bowler. Mukesh Patel said he was inspired by former Pakistani speedster Shoaib Akhtar and initially wanted his son to become a pacer. “I loved Shoaib Akhtar’s bowling, so I requested his coach to train Urvil as a fast bowler,” he said. The coach started preparing him accordingly and Urvil impressed everyone with his pace at a young age. However, while trying to bowl faster, he developed problems with his bowling action. “He started throwing the ball while trying to increase speed, so the coach shifted him toward wicketkeeping and batting,” his father explained. That decision completely transformed Urvil’s career. Mother could never watch his matches properly While Urvil was smashing records at Chepauk, his mother Gitaben Patel was not even watching the match properly. “I was sitting outside the house doing daily work. I was not watching the match,” she said. She admitted that she gets too nervous while watching her son bat. “I am always scared that my son may get out quickly, so I cannot watch his matches.” Gitaben revealed that she has made a personal promise: “Until Urvil plays for India, I will not watch his matches live.” Instead, she spends match hours praying at home. “When his matches happen, I pray to God and continue my household work,” she added. Rejected by Gujarat Titans, then came the comeback Urvil’s IPL journey has not been smooth. He was first picked in the IPL 2023 auction by Gujarat Titans for Rs 20 lakh. Mukesh Patel recalled receiving the news late at night while Urvil was in the village. “He called us around 10 pm and said, ‘Father, I have been selected by Gujarat Titans for Rs 20 lakh.’ We immediately travelled from Palanpur to the village and celebrated.” However, despite being part of the squad, Urvil did not get a single match opportunity that season and was eventually released. “That hurt him a lot,” his father admitted. “When he was removed from the team and called me, I was travelling in a local bus. I cried silently but gathered courage and told him, ‘Don’t worry, son. If not this year, next year your opportunity will definitely come.’” Soon after, Urvil answered his critics in spectacular style by smashing a 41-ball century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Selectors needed only three balls to notice him Mukesh Patel also shared an interesting story from Urvil’s Under-14 trials in Mehsana. Around 200 boys had gathered for the selection process, where former India cricketer Irfan Pathan was also present. “When Urvil went to bat, he first asked about the stump line. Just from that, selectors understood that this boy had cricketing awareness,” his father said. Urvil faced only three deliveries before selectors stopped him. “They told him, ‘You don’t need to bat anymore. Remove your pads and start wicketkeeping.’” That same evening, he received confirmation of his selection and was directly made captain of the Mehsana district team. “Don’t worry, mom. I’ll prove myself” Despite his growing fame, Urvil remains deeply connected to his family. According to his mother, he never likes his parents worrying too much about his performances. “He tells me, ‘Mom, don’t worry too much. Don’t ask me about cricket. I will prove myself.’” His parents say that beyond records and achievements, what makes them proudest is his humility and respect for elders. Whenever Urvil leaves home, he bows down and touches the feet of all elders in the family. Mukesh Patel said, Sometimes I wonder whether I ever respected my own parents in the way Urvil does today. Even I have learned from him. From playing with a plastic bat in childhood to scripting IPL history in front of a packed Chepauk crowd, Urvil Patel’s journey is not just about cricketing success — it is also a story of sacrifice, family support, resilience, faith and emotion.
